Today I want to talk to you about SoHo, a neighborhood in Manhattan and its iconic "Cast Iron District"!
SoHo stands for "South of Houston Street".
The "Cast Iron District" refers to the area of SoHo that is home to the largest concentration of cast iron buildings in the world.
These buildings were constructed between 1840 and 1880, a time when cast iron was prized for its strength and lower cost than stone and were often prefabricated and assembled on site.
This innovative method made the construction process faster and cheaper, allowing entire buildings to be created in just a few months.
Cast iron buildings have intricate and detailed facades, often with columns, arches and balconies.
Did you know that you could theoretically sustain a calamity on many of the buildings in the Cast Iron District? This is because cast iron facades are magnetic!
This architectural style has made SoHo one of the most photographed and iconic areas of New York.
Originally, SoHo was an industrial neighborhood with factories and warehouses. In the 60s and 70s, artists and creatives began to move here, attracted by the large spaces of the former warehouses, transforming them into lofts and art studios.
Today, SoHo is known for its art galleries, high-fashion boutiques, trendy cafes and gourmet restaurants. It is a point of reference for shopping and contemporary art.
Walking through SoHo is like taking a trip back in time, immersing yourself in a unique fusion of history, art and modernity. Don't miss the chance to visit this iconic corner of New York!
SoHo is located in lower Manhattan, south of Houston Street and north of Canal Street, stretching between Lafayette Street and the Hudson River.

Today I want to talk to you about a very beautiful area of New York, the "West Village".
In the 1960s and 1970s, it was the heart of New York's bohemian cultural movement and art scene.
Artists, writers and musicians such as Bob Dylan and Jack Kerouac have found inspiration among its cobbled streets and historic cafés.
Local residents and preservation groups have become concerned about development in the West Village and have fought to preserve the neighborhood's architectural and historical integrity.
More than 50 blocks, bordering 14th Street to the north, comprise a historic district established by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
There are some iconic places and monuments in this area, and it has also been the set of numerous films and TV series.
West Village is more than just a neighborhood; it is a place where every corner tells a story, where every step is a journey through time and every moment can transform into a precious memory.

DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON RETURNS IN INWOOD HILL PARK.
In September 2002, with a generous grant from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Kamala Cesar, Executive/Artistic Director of Lotus Music and Dance and Producer Carl Nelson created Drums Along the Hudson: A Native American and Multicultural Celebration.
It began as a traditional Pow Wow to celebrate Native American heritage and culture, and also to commemorate the Lenape people who first inhabited Inwood Hill Park, or Shorakapok ("edge of the water").
This event first took place annually in the spring, thereafter something new and different has been added each year to make the event more exciting and enjoyable -- including a Shad tasting, a White Pine tree planting (the Iroquois symbol of peace), international foods, drummers and dancers and a Native American Arts in Education Initiative. The event has attracted attendees from 400 in the first year to over 8,000 in recent years.

Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it is observed on the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial beginning of summer.
The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. Then known as Decoration Day, the holiday was proclaimed by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War.Official recognition as a holiday spread among the states, beginning with New York in 1873.
By 1890, every Union state had adopted it. The world wars turned it into a day of remembrance for all members of the U.S. military who fought and died in service.
In 1971, Congress standardized the holiday as "Memorial Day" and changed its observance to the last Monday in May.

There will be several events in New York this weekend:
Brooklyn's Memorial Day Parade in Bay Ridge starting at 11 a.m. May 27.
Concert at Greenwood Cemetery, May 27 from 2pm to 4pm, a great idea for a picnic.
Ceremony at the Sailor's Monument on Riverside drive, Manhattan from 10:00 to 12:00.
Loisada parade, in the East village along Avenue C between 5th and 12th streets.

"Manhattanhenge", also called the Manhattan Solstice, is an event during which the setting sun or the rising sun is aligned with the east–west streets of the main street grid of Manhattan, New York City.
The astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson claims to have coined the term, by analogy with Stonehenge (a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England, which was constructed so that the rising sun, seen from the center of the monument at the time of the summer solstice, aligns with the outer "Heel Stone").
The sunsets and sunrises each align twice a year, on dates evenly spaced around the summer solstice and winter solstice. The sunset alignments occur around May 28 and July 13. The sunrise alignments occur around December 5 and January 8.

Manhattan has a phenomenon of this kind due to its extensive urban canyons and its rectilinear street grid that is rotated 29° clockwise from true east–west.
Many streets align with the view of the Manhattanhenge including 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th Streets,Tudor City Overpass, Hunter's Point South Park in Long Island City, Queens

This year the Manhattanhenge dates are:
Half Sun on the Grid
Tuesday, May 28 at 8:13 pm ET
Saturday, July 13 8:21 at 8:21 pm ET

Full Sun on the Grid
Wednesday, May 29 at 8:12 pm ET
Friday, July 12 at 8:20 pm ET

Do you love dancing? This free event is for you!
Dance Parade returns on Saturday, May 18, 2024 and will celebrate its 18th annual parade and festival featuring 10,000 dancers presenting more than 100 unique dance styles.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony kicks off the event at 11:45 a.m. at 17th Street and Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas).
Dance Parade was founded in reaction to a 2006 New York State Supreme Court ruling that upheld New York's 1926 cabaret law, denying social dancing as an expressive activity under the First Amendment. In 2017, DP's support led to the repeal of the law that had repressed dance and culture for 91 years.

DP's unique contribution to this field comes from its ability to present dancers and choreographies across one hundred unique traditions and disciplines. Participating artists use DP as a way to reach wider audiences, preserve cultural heritage and promote collaborations. The annual event is recognized as the most diverse display of dance culture in the world and reaches audiences of more than 150,000 people each year.

The parade will wind along 6th avenue and then continue on 8th street to Tompkins Square Park, where the Dance Fest will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., a free event with 5 stages where choreographic shows, dance lessons aerial and social dance will take place .
