Located in Tribeca, CHART is a contemporary art gallery founded by Clara Ha
Shayna Miller builds tapered forms that jut out and engage the viewer in their space. Nooks and notches occasionally also operate around the edges of the canvas, lending a singular character to each of the artist’s suggestive works.
Often at the very peak of Miller’s mountainous formations are peculiar pustules that augur a transformative element: these protrusions are on the precipice of change, with paint, and its surface effects, portending that radical shift.
See this piece and others by Shayna Miller in our current group show, “Facture Fracture”, up now though August 23.

The works in “Facture Fracture” explore the potential of manipulated painterly surfaces as a way of communicating abstract ideas, demonstrating how accumulated influences and affects can only be pared down so far, and how future evolutions are inherently built on that which came before.
The four artists on view—Sam Branden, Kadar Brock, Shayna Miller, and Jack Arthur Wood—incorporate processes of selective accretion and excision in their work. Whether it’s through building up layers of fabric or paint, then trimming, sanding, or scraping, in each of their unique methods, layers of visual information are aggregated into larger constructions, often with revealing peeks at the foundational structures that lie beneath.

It’s the last day to see Tania Alvarez’s solo show, “Through Painted Panes”, the gallery’s ninth exhibition in our PROJECTION series.
Window-like forms, devoid of human presence, are used to convey the artist’s experience with chronic illness and the isolating effects of living with an invisible infirmity. In an effort to connect around loneliness and the cloistering effects of our contemporary digital landscape, Alvarez has constructed works that can be felt, observed, and interacted with, offering a opportunity for viewers to relate, even if only subconsciously.
By playing with psychological effects of scale and perspective, and depicting temporal or situational changes, Alvarez’s work creates a feeling of disembodiment, of being in one place and yet transported elsewhere.
It’s the last day to see Jennifer Coates’ solo show, “Edge Effects”, taking place at CHART and High Noon.
“Edge Effects” is an ecological term that refers to the sometimes problematic changes in biodiversity where different habitats converge. Coates uses acrylic and spray paint—synthetic chemicals—to represent the landscape, emphasizing the toxicity that now runs through most organisms. Despite this pervasive chemical presence, her paintings present an ecofeminist belief in the possibility of restoring the self through hyper connection with nature.
In a recent review in the , Alfred Mac Adam elegantly states:
“In Coates’s work, all systems are in danger, either through conflict or through entropy. In this sense, her work enacts chaos theory, insinuating as it does that nature is composed of ever-changing modalities, though in this case human intervention seems to call the immortality of nature itself into question.”

Coates anchors archetypes such as Diana, Pan, Dionysus, and the Maenads to the woodlands where she has spent much of her life, incorporating local wildlife like common birds and butterflies. The butterflies, for example, pollinate as well as “puddle”—a behavior that extracts minerals from mud, carrion, blood, and sometimes tears, signaling the edge between vitality and rot.

“In some way I want the paintings to read as a burst of intense energy right before everything disappears and goes extinct. A big apocalyptic Pagan dance party of mythological characters, plants, art history and different ways of painting.”
The home operates as a reflection of the body, and by incorporating the articles for her residential sculptures—scraps of clothing, recycled food packaging, home renovation samples—from quotidian encounters, Alvarez creates a chronicle of her life, both time-stamping the creations with self-specific objects, while also manifesting an autobiographical structure for viewers to explore.
