That's a wrap on Design Week 2021! Thank you all for joining us and a very special thank you to all those who helped share how to "design waste out". This year, the team decided to focus on sustainability and teaching people in the community about ways they can reduce waste. Participants were able to virtually attend talks, workshops, a panel, and learn about sustainability projects happening at NYU.

Our panelists were four passionate changemakers and innovators who have taken on the challenge of “designing waste out” through their work with community fridges, youth programming, development of recycling pipelines, zero waste education, and community organizing in order to create a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive future. Thank you Zenat Begum from Playground Coffee Shop, Daneille Foster-Russell from GrowNYC, Brigitte Vicenty from Inner City Green Team, and Monalisa Prasad from NYU Eats for your incredible words and advice.

During our Sustainable Packaging workshop, Kelsey Moffitt spoke about her work TerraCycle US and Loop and their mission to combat single-use waste by developing circular solutions to the current linear systems of recycling for hard-to-recycle materials.

Lastly, the Getting Involved workshop taught us how everyone can get involved in "designing waste out" of our lives. You can take action by joining sustainability clubs at NYU and national programs, shopping at farmers' markets, volunteering with local organizations, voting for sustainable policies, and so much more!

The videos of the panel and workshops will be up on our Youtube soon at bit.ly/NYUMSYT. Thank you again for joining us to take action and learn more about designing waste out 💜🌿

Join the Hackathon to fight COVID-19’s mental health fallout! While effective testing, exposure notification, and targeted restrictions and quarantines will help reopen society, until vaccines are available, the ever-shifting new normal is going to be an exceptionally difficult time for us all to navigate. We desperately need better ways to communicate, share our common experiences, create entertainment, and come together while also staying safe among an active pandemic. Through this hackathon, participants may work on projects that are broadly useful in supporting mental health and social connection.

The MakerSpace joined forces with others in the NYU community as a part of the NYU COVID 19 task force and we’ve spent the last several weeks producing face shields for medical staff that are in immediate need.

“After approval by NYU Langone Infection Prevention and Control, we began downloading the approved file to print on our machines. We have been working in the space to make as many as we can. We are 3D printing visors and laser cutting face shields that we then pass off to the NYU COVID19 team.

We are working with Dr. Lionnet and his team at NYU Langone who have put together a clean room to construct the visors that are then delivered to hospitals in the area. These NYU researchers, students, and professors have teamed up with medical community members to create more than 500 face shields as of last week – with more on the way!

The MakerSpace has been able to provide face shields directly to Elmhurst Hospital, Queens Hospital, and Suny Downstate.”

A HUGE THANKS to all of the medical and health professionals who are on the front lines fighting for our loved ones. We know how hard you are working and we will continue doing everything we can to support you!

As the need for PPE grows, NYU Langone medical staff and faculty in the Clinical Engineering department reached out to us for help with designing replacement parts for powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs). The clips on the side of the hoods break often and are hard to acquire quickly from the manufacturer. Victoria Bill, Director of the NYU MakerSpace, worked with Gabriella Cammarata, Studio Research Coordinator in the NYU IDM program, to design and create a prototype that snapped into the helmet. Over the past two days we were able to print 100+ of these PAPR clips and deliver them to the NYU Langone team.

Similarly to the PAPR clips, the NYU Langone team also sent us a part called a moisture trap that attached to the Siemens Maquet Servo-I ventilators. These can break as they are attached and detached, and can be hard for the hospitals to quickly source replacement parts. MakerSpace TA, Andy Garcia, was able to create a model of the part, which Victoria then used to 3D print prototypes for the medical team to test and give feedback.
