I just received some amazing news that I wanted to share with you. In my free time, I've been working with an organization dedicated to building a pediatric cancer hospital in Ghana, West Africa. Wish4life.org has just elevated my role to Goodwill Ambassador of Music. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be given this honor. As many of you know, our ancestors were taken from West Africa. Going back to do the work needed for the people of Ghana, with the understanding that I am representing so many, fills my heart with so much pride, joy, and emotion. Thank you, Dr. Tanya Trippett, for entrusting me with this very prestigious position. I will do my absolute best to bring music and healing to our children.

A few years ago, while I was on the road with Chic, my manager would coordinate a string of masterclasses and one-to-one lessons throughout Europe during our breaks. Teaching has to be at the top of my list of things that I've loved doing since I was a teenager. I've met and taught so many amazing individuals around the world and throughout the many years. Many have ended up being life-long bonds and friendships, not only with students but with other teachers as well.

Recently, one of my students/friends, someone I speak to pretty often, contacted me with some very devastating news regarding a doctor's misdiagnosis of an issue he'd been having with his lungs, which now turns out to be cancer and may be spreading to his liver. I felt the need to write today and say something to him and everyone reading this. As much as I love teaching, I love learning and listening. I read his message and learned something. What I learned is this. When you love someone or when someone loves you, the light of love may not always be seen or shine bright all of the time but it's always there. Love's light can shine brighter when you least expect it.

I'm sharing a portion of my friend's words that he sent.

He wrote to me. "I just want to finish this message by saying thank you for being so kind to me over the years and being generous with your time, whether it be my 2 lessons that I still cherish to this day or the masterclasses I was lucky enough to attend and for just spending time with me after a few of the Chic gigs and introducing me true other band members. These memories mean the world to me, and I’m proud to call you a friend. I’m going to fight this with everything I’ve got, and I’ll try to keep you posted if you’d like me to. Look after your loved ones Ralph. You never know what is around the corner."

I am asking that anyone who reads this do two things. The first one is this. Hold my friend close in your thoughts even if it's just for a moment and even though you might not know him, I know you know someone like him. Give him and them your heart just for a moment because his fight needs your light. And two...live today and every 24 hours with love, laughter, care, empathy, and kindness. Oh...and one more. Tell everyone that you speak to... wish them a beautiful day. Simple and meaningful. Please shine your light of love on others. You never know how your love, and your light can impact someone by just being kind.
