The Falling Star Review: Jacques Tati-Esque Noir Falls Just Short of Absurdist Ambitions 08/30/2024

The Falling Star Review: Jacques Tati-Esque Noir Falls Just Short of Absurdist Ambitions What if Jacques Tati made a film noir? The Falling Star offers a commendable answer to this question, though the final result does not quite live up to such expectations. This is the fifth feature from Belgium-based filmmaking duo Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon, and an ambitious one at that. The ba...

The Falling Star — Quad Cinema 08/29/2024

THE FALLING STAR opens Fri August 30! See the delightful caper from Abel & Gordon on the big screen!

"The Belgium-based creative couple are almost single-handedly keeping the classic burlesque tradition alive on-screen."
—Peter Debruge, Variety

Dominique Abel plays Boris, a former activist hiding from his dark past, keeping in the shadows as a barkeeper until a one-armed vigilante finally hunts him down. The fortuitous appearance of a double – the depressive recluse Dom (also played by Abel) – seems to offer the perfect decoy for Boris, his resourceful partner Kayoko, and their faithful friend Tim. But his tenacious and loopy ex-wife, the private eye Fiona (Fiona Gordon), could foil their master plan.

Gorgeous 4K restoration of Merchant Ivory classic and gay art cinema trailblazer MAURICE screens today (8/29) at 12pm & 7pm! 🎟️: http://bit.ly/Maurice4K.

"As might be expected, the costumes, settings and cinematography are once again ravishing." —Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Merchant Ivory’s adaptation of E.M. Forster’s posthumously published novel serves as a poignant attack on the stifling conformity and repression of English society on the eve of WWI. Maurice (James Wilby) is forced to struggle alone to come to terms with his s*xual identity after his first love, Clive (Hugh Grant), abandons him for a respectable marriage, denying his true desires. Then an encounter with Scudder (Rupert Graves), Clive’s groundskeeper, opens up new possibilities for the heartbroken Maurice.

New restoration of IN CUSTODY (Ismail Merchant, 1993) screens Wednesday, August 28! James Ivory in person! 🎟: http://bit.ly/MerchantIvoryQ.

"Intriguing, philosophical look at India's dying language of Urdu... Fully brimming over with heartfelt passion and honesty."
—Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle

Ismail Merchant’s feature directorial debut addresses a subject close to his heart: the expressive Urdu language of Northern India, in danger of extinction as political trends and modernization obscure its contributions to Indian culture. Merchant‘s treatment is wry and good-humored, as his characters – an aging Urdu poet (Shashi Kapoor) and a worshipful young college lecturer – clash despite their shared passion for the beauty of words. Anita Desai adapted her novel with Shahrukh Husain, incorporating poems by Urdu author Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

QUARTET (4K restoration!) screens Mon August 26 at 12pm & 7pm! 🎟️: bit.ly/MerchantIvoryQ.

"A brilliantly articulated expression and a lively entertainment to boot." —Andrew Sarris, The Village Voice

Isabelle Adjani stars alongside Maggie Smith and Alan Bates as three parts of a... QUARTET. Adjani won the 1981 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award for her performance as the vulnerable but complicated Marya, who, after her shady husband Stefan (Anthony Higgins) is imprisoned, finds shelter in the home of a manipulative and lecherous English art patron (Bates) and his painter wife (Smith). The twisted dynamic that develops among this trio plays out against a stunning recreation of the Golden Age of 1920s Paris and its café culture and extravagant nightlife. In adapting Jean Rhys’s 1928 autobiographical novel, Merchant Ivory achieved an artistic breakthrough that remains one of the team’s finest works.

THE BOSTONIANS (4K restoration!) screens Sun August 25 at 12pm & 7pm! 🎟️: bit.ly/MerchantIvoryQ.

“A rare delight, a high comedy with tragic undertones, acted to passionate perfection.” — Vincent Canby, The New York Times

Vanessa Redgrave stars in Merchant Ivory's THE BOSTONIANS (1984). At a Women’s Movement meeting, fiercely independent Olive (Redgrave) becomes mentor to gifted young orator Verena (Madeleine Potter) — who also attracts the amorous attentions of Olive’s Southern cousin Basil (Christopher Reeve). In this delicately precise adaptation of Henry James’s novel, Merchant Ivory explores the subtle power struggles between s*x and class, and the contesting demands of courtship and sapphic friendship.
