The fortuitous appearance of a double – the depressive recluse Dom (also played by Abel) – seems to offer the perfect decoy for Boris, his resourceful partner Kayoko, and their faithful friend Tim. But his tenacious and loopy ex-wife, the private eye Fiona (Fiona Gordon), could foil their master plan.

Merchant Ivory’s adaptation of E.M. Forster’s posthumously published novel serves as a poignant attack on the stifling conformity and repression of English society on the eve of WWI. Maurice (James Wilby) is forced to struggle alone to come to terms with his s*xual identity after his first love, Clive (Hugh Grant), abandons him for a respectable marriage, denying his true desires. Then an encounter with Scudder (Rupert Graves), Clive’s groundskeeper, opens up new possibilities for the heartbroken Maurice.

Ismail Merchant’s feature directorial debut addresses a subject close to his heart: the expressive Urdu language of Northern India, in danger of extinction as political trends and modernization obscure its contributions to Indian culture. Merchant‘s treatment is wry and good-humored, as his characters – an aging Urdu poet (Shashi Kapoor) and a worshipful young college lecturer – clash despite their shared passion for the beauty of words. Anita Desai adapted her novel with Shahrukh Husain, incorporating poems by Urdu author Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Isabelle Adjani stars alongside Maggie Smith and Alan Bates as three parts of a... QUARTET. Adjani won the 1981 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award for her performance as the vulnerable but complicated Marya, who, after her shady husband Stefan (Anthony Higgins) is imprisoned, finds shelter in the home of a manipulative and lecherous English art patron (Bates) and his painter wife (Smith). The twisted dynamic that develops among this trio plays out against a stunning recreation of the Golden Age of 1920s Paris and its café culture and extravagant nightlife. In adapting Jean Rhys’s 1928 autobiographical novel, Merchant Ivory achieved an artistic breakthrough that remains one of the team’s finest works.
