Look, I know my stories have been on and off lately.. But ACTUALLY, I've spared my audience, life has changed drastically since 2008, when I started sharing daily anecdotes with stories of NYC. But this one will make my book a best seller!

I have an "underground" P.R. Firm.. it's here (a page) on Facebook those with me for sometime are members of that page, I use the term "underground" for marketing attention, because every business I start is the Ford Motors of business.. their motto was an affordable car for the average American Family, you get a no frills car that only the rich could afford. , Our firm are the "Mad Men" for the struggling start up! We give them a big presence for half the cost.

So I get a call from a company, actually a guy that wants to bring nostalgic acts (i.e.) Lizard Lounge singing acts to NYC... years ago, if you walked down Broadway, the Village, etc. it was nothing to see signs outside cocktail lounges presenting Tony Bennet, Dakota Staton, Ella Fitzgerald... you pay a small fee, and you listened to the performer usually accompanied by a piano player. It made for a cozy atmosphere and made a ton of money for the club owner, way before "Netflix" and television took that all away.

I love nostalgia, I thought, when presented with it, it was a good idea, but it had to be structured well I mean realistically from his business plan the audience he wants to draw in went down with the Titanic or stays home 98% of the time but foreign visitors would love this, if we gave it a Vegas appeal.

And then the other shoe dropped. He had a crew of old Catskill acts, that juggled with one arm, tap dance with one foot. Sing Sinatra with a Tracheotomy... And he wants to appeal the W Hotel by June. If his performer(s) live that that long, I dunno, we may have something.

Not every game has a winner, but they have a dream. We see what we can do.

I built a P.R. firm out of scratch... it is a very perilous business, if you have Panache, flamboyance, confidence, self-assurance, style, flair, elan, dash, verve, zest... You can only hope to succeed in this business... it's a testament to being passionate about marketing and advertising...WHAT'S THE POINT OF THIS POST?

In 1989, I was being charged an arm and a leg to get my company out there... until I had, had enough... My Uncle George H. Hartman was an attorney, I was with him every single summer , and what I learned from that life was the power of reading... Not only reading but relating it to life, making it useful, making it my own. He was also an Elder in his religion, and when he gave a discourse he would relate something he read in the NY Times or Law Journal making the point, poignant!

This brings me to the life we live in today... with realty TV, The Kardashians and more... it is really difficult to read, the new generation ages (21-29) in fact do not believe in reading a real book, and why should they? Society has made it too easy to learn ANYTHING on Youtube... "Not hating". But learning, real learning is a serious process ....

So when they "pitch me" ON A CLIENTS SERVICES and how they want to put the client out there for the rest of the world to see, though brilliant, it loses an element .. A human palatable element. It's costing me a fortune to keep this going... until, now! I am teaching these "kids" how to use life, and the power of reading... the power in their surroundings to build this P.R. life... How to read the classics to understand Human nature, the Bible not withstanding... If you knew someone that walked on water, and calmed the seas with the raising of his hand.... You can help a company grow that still sells "buggy whips" . This isn't exploitation, this is capitalizing on a lost art... this is letting a client know, we are there for them, and with faith, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

Do You Need an Ad Agency or Do It Yourself?

One of the questions I get most often is “how do I get my ads on TV?” The same goes for advertising your business in magazines, in newspapers, on cable TV, and on major sites.

The easy way is to look up an Advertising Agency in your area and ask them to help you. Traditionally you need a BIG ad budget for an ad agency to work with you — $250,000 per year on up. These days times are tough and there are little agencies that will work with you for much less. Add to that TV, networks, and print media that are going broke and are making all kinds of deals on ads (but don’t expect them to advertise that — you gotta call!)

Placing your own ads on TV isn’t that hard. Simply call the TV station or cable TV office and ask for the sales department. A sales person will be happy to answer your questions and set up an ad schedule that will fit your budget. The same goes for newspapers, magazines, and print and online media that specialize in covering your industry.

Here are some basics you need to know when planning your own ad strategy:

1) TV gets you a large, general audience. This is especially true of CBS, NBC, ABC and your local TV news shows. To get a more targeted audience (for example 25 to 34 year-old women who have jobs and kids) advertise on cable TV. Different cable channels and shows are designed to appeal to different age groups, interest groups, and income levels. You can run your ad on shows that focus on people who would be likely to find your product or service of interest.

2) It takes time and money to create your own TV commercial. Get it done right and cheap by hiring a local video production expert. Many of these pros work alone from home. So a few hundred dollars could get you a commercial that looks good enough, sell well, and will be accepted by TV stations.

3) Don’t forget about industry media. The magazine, newsletter, or online site that everyone in your industry goes to for news is exactly where a business-to-business firm needs to advertise. Often these ads are pretty cheap but reach hundreds or thousands of decision makers in your industry. Keep your ad running month after month to build results. Offer free consulting and be easy to get in touch with on the phone and by email.

Setting up your own big time ad schedule isn’t hard to do. By following these simple tips you can jump in and learn as you go. Right now media are hungry — really hungry — so this could be YOUR time to succeed in the New Economy.
