YOU'RE INVITED: NEXT SUNDAY APRIL 28:

East Brooklyn Congregations announces an opening action for From the Ground Up: Oral Histories of the Nehemiah Homes

April 18, Brooklyn, New York—East Brooklyn Congregations is excited to announce the opening of From the Ground Up: Oral Histories of the Nehemiah Homes, a free public history exhibit on display at the Brownsville Heritage House, 581 Mother Gaston Blvd, Brooklyn, NY 11212 (inside the Stone Avenue Branch Library). The exhibit opening action will take place Sunday April 28, 2 pm at Nehemiah Park, followed by a march down the block for an opening reception at the Brownsville Heritage House from 3 pm - 6 pm

Join Nehemiah homeowners, builders, and longtime community leaders in celebrating one of the most successful affordable homeownership initiatives in NYC history. Action speakers will teach the history of the Nehemiah effort and explain its connection to ongoing affordable building campaigns across the city.

Named for the 5th-century Jewish prophet who led his people in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, the Nehemiah homes were founded as a series of owner-occupied, affordable housing developments located throughout East Brooklyn. This historic development was made possible by the deeply-rooted, neighborhood and congregation leaders of East Brooklyn Congregations (EBC). Beginning in 1982 with 1,100 units in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and now numbering over 5,000 throughout the city, the Nehemiah homes represent an unprecedented, intergenerational effort to build and preserve affordable community.
East Brooklyn Congregations is an affiliate of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), the nation’s oldest and largest network of non-partisan citizen’s organizations. Our organization is composed of dues-paying member institutions, including congregations, schools, and neighborhood associations. We believe that people working together have the power to change their communities and their country for the better. We challenge talented leaders to imagine the change they can accomplish, connect individuals and institutions to build power, and mobilize people by the thousands. We set audacious goals, create savvy strategies, and achieve transformative results.
