Fall foliage is not quite peak, so if you're thinking about heading to VT, check out the Mount Snow/Wilmington area.

🎉 What an exhibit! Thank you for hosting and curating a marvelous collection of in Salon des Refusés 2024. So many familiar names and excellent artwork!
❤️ Appreciate all you art lovers who came out, and apologies to those who didn't find me where I was "supposed to be" (aka by my painting 🤭). I wandered off periodically to check out the exhibit, and since it is a very large space I missed quite a few of you.
💬 Please leave me a comment here to let me know what you thought of the exhibit!! I'd love to hear from you 😁
If you're planning to go another weekend, you'll find my painting in the row to the left after you enter the 2nd floor gallery. To reach that gallery, enter BWAC on Van Brunt Street, go all the way to the back, out the door, turn left and there should be a sign pointing you to the stairs. An elevator might be available, too.
There are a couple of other exhibits in the building - so much Art to see!!
Weekends, 1-6 pm, through Oct 13

The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition in Red Hook prepares to proudly showcase many of the works that didn’t make the cut for a popular open call at the Brooklyn Museum that drew over 4,000 entries. Embodying the ethos of alternative exhibitions like the late-19th century Salon des Indépendants, whose slogan “without jury nor reward” touted an inclusive, come-one-come-all approach, admission into the "Salon des Refusés 2024" involves simply sending in one’s rejection letter. Other than that, the only requirements are a maximum of one artwork per person, no larger than four by six feet, and a fee of $20.
The show will include works by over 200 artists — nearly as many as will be featured in the Brooklyn Museum’s show opening a few weeks later. Among them are Meridith NcNeal’s meticulously rendered watercolor of a witchy shop in Bushwick, a 90-minute film by Risha Gorig, Juan Pinto’s collage portrait of critic Jerry Saltz made out of metrocards, and a painting by Nancy Rodrigo titled “Nipple Eyes,” which is exactly what it sounds like."

* In 1863, the Paris Salon held its annual exhibition of academic arts. Thousands of artists applied but were rejected and were unable to display their work in the official Salon exhibition. It was determined that their work did not fulfill academic standards of the time. Emperor Napoleon III, who wanted the public to make the decision, organized a simultaneous exhibition of all the rejects in the Palace of Industry. This exhibition included artists such as Manet, Cezanne, Pissarro and Whistler. The exhibition of “rejects” became famously known as the Salon des Refusés 1863.

EXTENDED thru Sept 5th! Catch "Summer Breeze" - paintings of seaside CT, Block Island, and Long Island - in the window of Assemblymember Robert Carroll's office on 7th Ave, between 13th and 14th St in Park Slope Brooklyn.
416 7th Avenue, Brooklyn
Did you get to any of these or other lovely breezy escapes this summer?? 🏖️🌊🩴☀️
🖼️ Fresh off the easel! And swipe... you'll see its mini-me, an oil study I did "en plein air" earlier this spring. I was captivated by those elegant Grecian planters, the way the light and shadows, and the reflected light IN the shadows vary.
Plus, who could resist those fantastic yellow and purple flowers? There's also a surprising amount of sky blue reflected in the windows that add another subtle punch of color. But, ya gotta love red - this townhouse is faced with brick!
Brownstone with Grecian Planters, oil on canvas on archival panel, 20" x 16"
Enjoy more than roses at the Cranford Rose Garden ! There are also dahlias and all kinds of flowering annuals to add color and texture. Then there's the Shakespeare Garden and Children's Garden for other delights 😍🌹🌺🌻🌼🏵️
All watercolor on paper:
1) Dahlias in Rose Garden, 12"x 16"
2) Coleus in Rose Garden, 12"x 16" (sold)
3) Shakespeare's Garden, 9" x 12"
4) Bench in Children's Garden, 9" x 12 (sold)
Just a few years ago, wood pilings like these were a common sight in the Gowanus Canal. No longer! While cleaning up our local Superfund site (declared highly toxic several years ago), these have been removed along with the radioactive sludge they've been scooping out. Too bad ... I always enjoyed the handmade feel they added to our built environment.
Anyone know what, if any, purpose they served?
Pilings by Bridge, oil on canvas, 20"x16"
🎈 SOLD! A surprise birthday gift and a bit of Prospect Park to take to a new home in another city. Nice memories of popsicles and hot dogs! Plus.... Who's looking forward to cooler temps! 🙋🏻♀️
Vendor in Prospect Park, oil on canvas on archival panel, 12" x 16"
Small summer pleasures - cheerful daylilies! I called this one "Daylily Chorus" because they look like they're singing to the sun in unison ☀️
Oil on canvas, 8x10 inches
Notice anything about these 2 paintings? I painted them at completely different times, and one in the winter (Autumn view), the other in the spring.
I only noticed several months later what I had done by coincidence!
Of course, these are inspired by the water lilies at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 24 inches
Red roses are classic, but the orange-ish ones have a different charm! Which do you prefer?
Did you get to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this summer? Their Cranford Rose Garden is a real treat all summer long!
Do you prefer going to ....
1) a beach or
2) a lake ?
I'll take either!
These are small oil studies I painted "en plein air" (on-site) several summers apart.
Which US National Park is your favorite?! I don't think I can say. We have such an incredible bounty of natural beauty preserved in this country. If you haven't been, add these to your bucket list:
1) Zion
2) Bryce Canyon
3) Capitol Reef
4) Near Moab: Arches and Canyonlands
It's always refreshing to get out in nature, right??
Which of these 3 helps you feel cooler?! Or are you already chilling at the Connecticut shore, Block Island, or near a cool stream upstate NY?
See the first two in the window of Assemblymember Robert Carroll's office on 7th Ave, Park Slope Brooklyn. The 3rd is at Trees Lounge at Nitehawk Cinema Prospect Park.
Hope you are staying cool!! ❄️❄️❄️
Between sightseeing and hiking, I've barely had enough time to sit and paint, except one cloudy morning.
Here in the Austrian Alps, we are warned on hiking trails to watch out for... Not bears or moose as we'd expect in North America, but COWS!!
In fact, after one grueling trek up steep trails we reached the peak at around 6000' (we took a gondola most of the way, so don't be too impressed!), and came upon a herd of cows. Whaaa???!!
Farmers bring their herds up to the mountain tops every summer where the grass is sweeter, and in early fall go back down to the valley. That must be why the cheeses and butter taste so good 😋!!
Get a Taste of Italy! 🇮🇹☕ I'm excited to finally show my Tuscany paintings outside of my studio, thanks to .nyc on 5th Ave in Park Slope, a lovely and welcoming Italian espresso bar. Grab an iced latte and a pastry, and imagine you're in a small hilltop village in Tuscany! And on the way out, pick up some authentic Italian pastas and sauces to enjoy at home. 😋
On 5th Ave, between Union and Berkeley Pl. Open 7 am to 5 pm every day.
Raise your hand ✋ if you'd like to be here now... Or a smile 😁 if you're already by the beach!
This is a view of the balcony of a hotel between Amagansett and Montauk, two swanky towns in the Hamptons, the East End of Long Island. This spot managed to be very low key and away from the crowds. I remember the cooling sea breeze well!
The next time you're in Park Slope, you can see it and a few other waterfront paintings in the window of Assemblymember Robert Carroll's office, 7th Ave between 13th and 14th Streets.
Balcony by the Sea, oil on canvas, 16" x 12"
Finished! The last springtime view of Brooklyn Botanic Garden for this season. The pergola dripping with purple wisteria flowers along a walkway flanked by blazing pink and red azaleas and bright yellowy greens of new foliage... Who can resist?!
