We are open every Saturday from April to October. We are currently closed for the season and available by appointment only.
The Kelly Street Garden is a social justice project bringing fresh produce into the South Bronx. Our initiative begins with working alongside residents in Kelly Street, to grow their own vegetables, herbs and flowers in a sustainable and pesticide free environment. We are also actively participating and engaging in community forums, resident to resident dialogues, research and seeking partnerships

Roses in December?
We take compost seriously. That is why it is important for you to sign this petition RIGHT NOW!!!
In case you have not yet heard, recent city budget cuts announced this week call for an elimination of funding for community composting in NYC by the end of December - effectively eliminating the compost programs at GrowNYC, Big Reuse, LES Ecology Center, Earth Matter, Queens Botanical Garden, NY Botanical Garden, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden, among other impacts.
Petition signatures are being collected here to urge Mayor Adams to halt these cuts: https://www.grownyc.org/petition
If you have the ability/capacity to spread the word, we'd be grateful.

Our Story
Kelly Street Garden (KSG), located in the Longwood/Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, was developed in 2014 as a partnership between Banana Kelly, a 40-year-old local housing advocacy non-profit, and Workforce Housing, a private NYC-based affordable housing developer. Through a substantial grant from Morgan Stanley, a 2,500 square foot urban farm was designed and installed at the rear of the four residential buildings encompassing the site, with the goal to support the food security, health, cultural and educational enrichment of local residents. The garden is located in what has been designated as the poorest Congressional district in the United States.
During early renovations, community members developed their vision for the formerly garbage strewn, rat infested yard. There had been an earlier incarnation of the garden as a result of activism after the “Decade of Fire” which left much of the South Bronx in ruins. The original project faltered due to lack of maintenance after years of being deprived of sufficient funding and volunteer support. A professional garden manager was engaged to live onsite in lieu of a paid salary. An oversight committee of local residents was organized to help ensure the garden’s continuity.
As part of the project, a 7,500 gallon rainwater harvesting system was constructed to create a dedicated source of irrigation for the garden. It also reduces stress caused to the municipal sewage system by stormwater runoff. NYC’s antiquated system was designed over 150 years ago, for a city whose population was a fraction of what it is today. The system endangers homes and local bodies of water during heavy storms, where Combined Sewage Overflows (“CSOs,” or raw sewage) are emitted, further stressing the health of an already overburdened community. Stormwater mitigation in the garden is one of the first steps in addressing the health of our local community.
