The ultimate sustainable packaging! We need more of this!

Vendors in Asia have come up with alternative packaging to eliminate the use of plastics by using baskets made from coconut fronds & banana leaf packaging.

The baskets (made entirely out of coconut fronds) are locally called ‘Sulingkat’. The fruit & veg wrapped in banana leaves also make the agricultural produce last longer since they keep the moisture in while blocking the heat.

In Southeast Asia, more than 75% of the material value of recyclable plastic is lost.
With only 18 to 28% of recyclable plastic recovered & recycled, most plastic packaging waste pollutes the environment, according to studies by the World Bank Group.

Using coconut & banana leaves are a great alternative to plastic as the leaves are large, thick & supple enough to be folded. This method significantly reduces the amount of plastic required.

There is also general kitchen cleaning, stocking of supplies, tying up cardboard boxes, and some lifting of heavy cases of fruit and taking out large barrels of fruit scraps for compost pick up. A man or woman can do this work. Candidates must be able to speak English well and be available on and around certain holidays as these are our busiest times. Hours are 10:30 to 4:00 or 5:00 PM four days per week and 9:00 to 3:00 on weekends.
