On October 18, the team hosted the annual school reception at SmileCon in New Orleans. Alumni, faculty and friends gathered to reconnect and network after a full exhibition day at the conference.
Executive Director Ryan St. Germain shared news from the College, including the newly completed first floor renovations of the College and the campaign for the new clinic renovation.

Many of our stay through the weekend to serve as delegates—and to enjoy the local NOLA festivities, including the Krewe of Boo Halloween parade!

Spotted: Recent alumni connecting at national dental meetings!
Last month, Dr. Dushyanthan Nithiyananthasothy (BS '14, DDS '22) and Dr. Katie Rothas (DDS '19) reconnected during the National Network for Oral Health Access Conference hosted in Baltimore, MD, a conference for dentists that work in community health. Dr. Nithiyananthasothy currently works at a community health enter in Virginia. While at NYU, he was a dental hygiene outreach coordinator for the school-based rotations completed by D2 and D3 students before he started his own journey towards obtaining a DDS degree.
Dr. Katie Rothas is a dental director at community health center in Central New York and recently celebrated her first, 5-year class reunion with the Class of 2019 in September!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at the College!
Yesterday, Amarilis Jacobo (DDS ‘94) returned to NYU Dentistry to reflect on her time in dental school, her accomplished career. She encouraged students to “stay in New York City and work hard to increase representation in the profession.”

As a private practice owner, Dr. Jacobo has been heavily involved in organized dentistry for the last 30 years. She also serves on the NY State Dental Association Board of Trustees, Hostos Community College Foundation, and Saint Barnabas Hospital Board of Trustees.

Her pride and joy has been the opening of La Clinica Astin Jacobo, a free dental clinic named after her father at the Astin Jacobo Middle School in the Dominican Republic.

Last month, Dr. Jacobo also celebrated her 30th class reunion with the Class of ‘94!

Yesterday, our NYU Dentistry representatives attended the NYU Alumni Association Board of Directors meeting, which includes alumni representatives from all schools.

Kudos to Vera W.L. Tang (DDS '00, BA '97), who was elected to a three-year term on the NYUAA board! This fall, Dr. Tang joins three other representatives on the board: school president Angela De Bartolo (DDS '87), past school president Dr. Amin Ayoub (DDS '92), and founding member Gerald Klaczany (DDS '86).

The NYUAA works collaboratively with the Alumni office to advise and develop strategies towards the organizational mission and advancement of NYU and its alumni. Signature initiatives include the annual NYU Alumni Awards and the NYU Alumni & Families Weekend.

We look forward to collaborating with the Office of Alumni Relations with our dedicated Dentistry NYUAA board members this year!

Serving the community and continuing a legacy!
Today’s day at Educational Alliance’s Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side is dedicated to Dr. Allen Vershel. As a tribute to Dr. Vershel, and to continue his legacy of dedicated care, the Vershel family has pledged to sponsoring a series of community outreach days, named the "Dr. Allen Vershel Road Show."

A lifetime New Yorker, Dr. Allen Vershel grew up in Brooklyn and received his DDS from U. Pennsylvania. He subsequently served as an officer in the U.S. Navy at the Chincoteague Naval Air Station before moving to Long Island to start his dental practice, which thrived for many years. He even authored a textbook, “Your Future in Dentistry” for young dentists. Dr. Vershel passed away at 93 years old in August 2024.

The NYU Dentistry Local Community Outreach Program is pleased to help Dr. Vershel’s family honor his memory by providing dental screenings and care to New Yorkers who lack access to quality oral health care.

The 2024 Reunion was a dance party through the decades! Last week, alumni from the ten class years (1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 20014, and 2019) traveled back to New York City to celebrate their class milestone anniversaries! Alumni and faculty members reunited with classmates, relived stories, and created new memories with friends old and new. Reunion Committee Chairs Ivan Vazquez (DDS '89) and Fabiola Milord (DDS '94) congratulated the Class of 1974 on their 50-year reunion and recognized the Classes of 2014, 1989, and 1994 for having the highest attendees.

Alumni Association President Angela De Bartolo (DDS '87) presented the three Reunion Alumni Awards: Steven Gounardes (DDS '84), a leader in organized dentistry, received the Meritorious Service Award; Fabiola Milord (DDS '94), a dedicated volunteer and mentor, received the Meritorious Service Award; and Dean Vafiadis (DDS '89, PG '91), a renowned prosthodontic specialist, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Welcome back, Alumni! Last night, we welcomed alumni and guests from the 2024 Reunion Classes back to the College for VIP campus tours, a networking reception and Alumni CE!

Our alumni speakers Analia Veitz-Keenan, ‘99; Fred Puccio, ‘94; and Clement Kairouz, ‘19; kicked off the Reunion Weekend with inspiring CE lectures, and guests enjoyed a first look at the newly renovated first floor of the College, including the Apa Aesthetic Suite, Patient Registration, and Diagnostic Imaging area.

We were delighted to welcome our volunteers at the September 17th Volunteer Appreciation Night at the stunning Ascent Lounge, hosted by the NYU Alumni Association.
Our alumni volunteers kicked off the new school year by toasting their service to the NYU community with fellow leaders and volunteers from all NYU schools and the NYU Alumni Association leadership.
We are so appreciative of our dedicated Reunion Committee members and board of directors, who help us connect with our alumni and make our programming a success!
