John Platt's On Your Radar

Acoustic music showcase curated and hosted by John Platt.

Blog — Spotlighth Album Review: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings "Woodland" 10/01/2024

Four years after their Nashville studio was destroyed by a tornado and 13 yeas after their last album of original material as a duo, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have returned with a superb album that's well worth the wait.

Blog — Spotlighth Album Review: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings "Woodland" For almost 30 years, starting with the Grammy-nominated Revival album in 1996, Gillian Welch and her partner in music and life, David Rawlings, have set the standard for acoustic Americana duos.

This week "Sunday Supper" presents a double birthday bonanza. Monday is BBruce Springsteens 75th birthday. He celebrated last Sunday with a full-tilt concert, as usual, at the See.Hear.Now Festival on his old turf in Asbury Park. I'll have a musical tour of some of the cities, including Asbury Park, in the Boss's catalogue.

Meanwhile, Saturday was the 90th anniversary of LLeonard Cohens birth. Singer, songwriter, poet, ladies man, spiritual explorer, eternal sage — we'll let his timeless songs, by Cohen himself and others, speak to us.

I'll also have new music to savor from AAmy Helm EEugene Ruffolo LLaura Marling DDavid Berkeley HHeather Pierson and Samantha Joy.

Cut the cake and dig the music between 4:00-6:00 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, plus on-demand in the WFUV Archives, on the WFUV app, or the hero-worshipping smart speaker of your choice.

Blog — VIDEO PREMIERE: Neale Eckstein "Like a Poem Needs a Rhym" 09/11/2024

Many music lovers know of Neale Eckstein's talents as a photographer, a house concert presenter, a studio owner, songwriter, and sideman. (Not to mention parents in the Boston area knowing him as a pediatric dentist!) Now at last Neale is releasing his first solo album, co-produced by Matt Nakoa. Here's a video for the first single, which the New Folk Initiative is honored to share exclusively.

In honor of Labor Day, this week's "Sunday Supper" toasts working class heroes, like David Bromberg, Jason Isbell, Billy Bragg, Miranda Hardy, and, yes, Johnny Paycheck.

Bob Dylan has to be one of the hardest working men in show business, with his Never Ending Tour and constant recordings from the archives. I'll have one from the newest, "Live Recordings 1974," along with new releases from two guys who've escaped the "New Dylans" label, Steve Forbert and Dan Bern. Plus classics from Nina Simone, The Mavericks, and Bruce Springsteen.

It's nothing but quality time from 4:00-6:00 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, always on-demand in the WFUV Archives, on the WFUV app, or the industrious smart speaker of your choice.

The prolific and prodigiously talented Elvis Costello hits the Big 7-0 today, a cause for celebration on "Sunday Supper." We'll tap into his rich and varied catalog, including collaborations with Allen Toussaint and Burt Bacharach, and share some well-chosen covers by Diana Krall, Audra McDonald, and Linda Ronstadt, among others.

Speaking of collaborations, the Brazilian icon Milton Nascimento and the American bassist Esperanza Spalding have just released a new album. I'll get to that, along with a new release from Aoife O'Donovan, teaming up with Hawktail, and have a few valedictory songs for the end of summer.

My musical aim is true between 4:00-6:00 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, as well as on-demand in the WFUV Archives, on the WFUV app, or the eclectic smart speaker of your choice.

In between the Olympics and the Democratic convention, "Sunday Supper" opens today with odes to joy by Lucinda Williams, Josh Ritter, Stevie Wonder, Buskin & Batteau, Grace Pettis, and others. To quench your musical thirst, I'll proffer tasty libations by Sarah Jarosz, The Eagles, Rupert Holmes, and the patron saint of summer good times, Jimmy Buffett.

We'll introduce you to new music by Guy Davis ("The Legend of Sugarbelly"), Shemekia Copeland ("Blame It On Eve"), and Tim O'Brien and Della Mae covering Tom Paxton, bluegrass-style. And we'll honor the 55th anniversary of Woodstock with a massive mashup of multiple versions of Joni Mitchell's classic.

Enjoy an extended musical cocktail hour from 4:00-6:00 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, on-demand in the WFUV Archives, on the WFUV app, or the joyful smart speaker of your choice.

Chris Smither: Sunday Supper Session 2024 | WFUV 08/17/2024

In mid-August the concert calendar has slowed down a bit, but there are still shows of note with The War and Treaty and Andrew Bird in NYC and the Long Island Bluegrass Festival out in Copiague this weekend and more with Mary Fahl & Jesse Terry, The Steel Wheels, and KJ Denhert next week.

08/11/2024

Today's "Sunday Supper" welcomes the veteran guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Smither for a session in Studio A. Nearly 80, his playing and singing have never sounded better!

The program also salutes a couple of other musicians with significant birthdays (Mark Knopfler's 75th and Joe Jackson's 70th) who are going strong.

Plenty to celebrate from 4:00-6:00 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, plus on-demand for two weeks in the WFUV Archives, on the WFUV app, or the ever-youthful smart speaker of your choice.

08/04/2024

Technically this weekend is the midway point between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox, so summer turns to high on today's "Sunday Supper" with songs for midsummer. You'll hear avatars of summer like The Beach Boys and Bruce Springsteen not one one but two Joni Mitchell summer selections, and faves by Frank Sinatra, Gordon Lightfoot, R.E.M., Chuck Prophet, and Bob Dylan, among others.

Some may be less predictable, like Bill Morrissey, Ana Egge, Red Molly, Janis Ian, and Tina Ross.

It's a summertime thing from 4:00-6:00 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org not to mention in the WFUV Archives, on the WFUV app, or the lazy, hazy smart speaker of your choice.

Blog — Spotlight Album Review: Madeleine Peyroux "Let's Walk" 08/01/2024

She's always an expressive voice with great taste in covers, along with a few original tunes. On her new album (her 9th) she wrote all the songs (with her longtime collaborator, Jon Herrington). Madeleine Peyroux calls "Let's Walk" a "labor of love." I call it a beautiful gift to us.

Blog — Spotlight Album Review: Madeleine Peyroux "Let's Walk" When Madeleine Peyroux released her debut album, Dreamland , in 1996, she was a 23-year-old singer who spent years busking in  Paris and had an uncanny vocal similarity to Billie Holiday.
