NYLS’s Office of Academic Planning and Career Development provides law students with tailored guidance from their first semester to well beyond graduation. We spoke with a few recent grads to hear more about their careers and share what they've learned with current law students.
We recently spoke with Ilana Valins ’22, a Business Representative at SAG-AFTRA.
Tell us about your current role.
I am responsible for working with performers and ensuring that their contracts aren't breached. In addition, I negotiate and provide solutions when a breach occurs. I also work with studios and independent production companies regarding performers and performers' rights.
How was the Office of Academic Planning and Career Development helpful in preparing you to pursue your career?
I had very little idea how I wanted to use my law degree until I spoke to the Office and learned that a law career can come in many different forms. Specifically, Elizabeth Dambriunas ’85 and Aisha Joseph gave me guidance on how to pursue a law career without losing my personal values and interests. I highly recommend scheduling one-on-one meetings with your advisor.
What career advice would you give to current law students?
My biggest piece of advice for law students is to remember that everyone is on their own path. You can't compare your grades, career, or achievements with anyone else’s. Also, don't put yourself in a box! I did internships in multiple discipline areas while in law school and it gave me a broad perspective on my abilities.
Last week, NYLS students taking part in the Law and Global Society Summer Program, joined by Professors Penelope Andrews and Kirk Burkhalter, had the opportunity to visit the Italian Supreme Court and meet the presiding judge, in addition to a tour of the sights around Rome.

We recently spoke with Paulina Marino ’23, an NYLS Wilf Fellow working in conjunction with the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (NJ OPD) in Newark.
Tell us about your current role.
The fellowship is project-based; the project includes working with inmates who were juveniles charged as adults and given a life sentence. The goal of the project is to submit briefs and argue in front of the court mitigating factors, including rehabilitation in order to lessen the individual’s sentence. In addition, I have taken on a juvenile caseload and represent juveniles in criminal court proceedings.
How was the Office of Academic Planning and Career Development helpful in preparing you to pursue your career?
I owe so much to the Office and particularly Dean Swati Parikh. I explained to them how much I loved interning at the NJ OPD and Dean Parikh helped me coordinate with the NJ OPD and suggested applying for the fellowship as a way to work with them long-term. I am so fortunate that after this fellowship concludes, I will begin working as a full-time Juvenile Public Defender with the OPD in the fall. During law school, I tried to use as many resources as possible including résumé and cover letter writing help, interview prep with NYLS professors, and attending public interest networking events and fairs.
What career advice would you give to current law students?
I would tell them to cast a wide net when applying, be open to new opportunities by applying to a variety of different careers in different places. I was applying through public defenders’ offices websites and not hearing much. I never really considered a fellowship, but it was with the help of the Office of Academic Planning and Career Development and the wonderful faculty that I was able to secure a career in a field I am passionate about.
