Independence Day is just around the corner, and that means fireworks! 🎆 For many dogs, loud irregular sounds can be stressful and anxiety inducing, so what can you do to keep your pup calm on the 4th? Desensitization to loud noises is important- you can help ease your dog out of their anxiety by playing recordings of loud noises starting at a low volume, and gradually building, all the while giving them treats as a reward for good behavior! It can take a few daily sessions for your dog to acclimate to the noise, so keep at it! Need a hand desensitizing your dog to loud noises like fireworks and thunder? It’s summer storm season! Lots of dogs get anxiety from thunder, so what’s the best way to desensitize them to it? There are lots of different avenues, like distracting them with a toy filled with treats, playing white noise, using a weighted vest, or moving them to a quiet part of the house. When skies are clear, you can also help desensitize your dog to thunder by playing recordings of storms, and slowly increasing the volume and reassuring your dog! Want to learn more? There’s a heat wave in New York! For the first time since 1988 the city will experience 5 consecutive days above 90°- with climbing humidity, the real feel temperature can exceed 100! In this scorching heat, it’s important to pay attention to your dog anytime you’re outside; when the air is in the 90s, asphalt and concrete can be anywhere between 45 to 55° hotter! At those heats, within 60 seconds your dog’s paws can get badly burned.
