In a drashah, Reb Chaim Vital zt'l spoke about bitachon, and asserted that if someone truly trusts in Hashem, Hashem will support him even if he doesn’t work at all. One simple Yid heard this, and decided to put it into practice.

The gentiles who frequented his shop mocked him when they found him learning Torah, instead of working. He told them that he closed the shop, and trusts that Hashem will provide.

A few days later, a gentile merchant came into his store carrying a heavy fur cloak, "I bought this for cheap, and I'll sell it to you."

The Yid explained to him that his store was closed. The gentile replied, "Even so, the fur is too heavy for me to carry around. I will leave it here. When you the have money, you can pay me," and he left the store.

The Yid tried to lift the fur to put it aside, but it ripped and many silver coins fell out. Hashem had granted him wealth because he trusted in Hashem.

A neighbor heard what happened, and decided that he too will stop working. Weeks passed, and he wasn’t earning money.

He asked Reb Chaim Vital for an explanation. "Why did my neighbor become wealthy with his bitachon, while I didn’t earn anything at all?"

Reb Chaim Vital explained, "When your neighbor trusted in Hashem, he didn’t know how Hashem will help him. But you were waiting for the fur cloak..."

Reb Yisroel Salanter once found himself in a strange town with nowhere to stay. After inquiring he ended up at the house of one of the baal habatim in town. When he arrived, the man greeted him and asked “by any chance do you know how to do shchitah? Reb Yisroel Salanter answered “yes I do, how can I help?” The man explained that they had a party, and the town shoichet was not around. All they had was a cow with no one who could shecht it. R’ Yisroel obliged and the baal habos was relieved. But in passing he remarked, “by the way, I don’t have enough money to return home, can you advance me the money for the rest of the train fare, and when I return home, I will send you the money.” The Baal Habos replied, “listen, I don’t even know you, how can I possibly trust you to send me back the money?”
R’ Yisroel used this story time and again to illustrate the inconsistency with which people do Mitzvois. “I was good enough to shecht their cow without even a moment’s inquiry, but I’m not believable enough to return my train fare.”
Very often we view people as being good enough for one mitzvah or in one scenario, but we don’t allow the same presumed veracity to carry over to any other scenario.

Rav Gamliel Rabinowitz writes (Tiv HaEmunah) that Rav Shabsi of Rashkov describes in his writings on the Siddur the greatness of saying L’Dovid twice a day from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Simchas Torah. That individual will be guaranteed that his years will be found to be good, and it will be delightful for him. Even if there was an evil decree in Shamayim written against a person, saying L’Dovid makes it capable of having it nullified. All the different types of prosecuting Malachim will be removed from upon him, and all the harsh and evil decrees upon him will be abolished, which will allow him to emerge innocent and exonerated from the judgement. This is because from Rosh Chodesh Elul, the thirteen wellsprings of the thirteen Attributes of Hashem’s mercy are opened and are flowing down to us. It is for this reason that the merciful Name of Hashem is mentioned thirteen times in the Perek of L’Dovid! Torah U'Tefillah

There was a Rosh Kollel who was making his Corona phone calls raising money from eretz Yisroel. He called one person, and she was very harried. She wasn’t in the best of moods. He gave his yearly pitch and she said she’d see what she could do. He then benched her with the usual, parnassah and brocha.. vichulu. She then said in a slight fit of anger, “right now, I don’t need a brocha like that. I cannot, for the life of me, find my car keys. It’s driving me insane.” He then answered her, “well in that case, let me give you a brochah that you should find your keys, asap. She said thank you and let me take down your information to send a check. She sat down grabbed a pad, and underneath were her car keys. She laughed and replied “I was about to have the dealer send me a new key fob, but instead I guess the Abishter wanted me to give you that money.”
The Rosh Kollel later explained that when giving people brochas, you can’t always think about what you think they need, sometimes you just have to focus on what’s going on within the immediate and what they feel they’re missing. That particular brochah is all the chizuk they really need. … Lekovoid Shabbos Koidesh

Inspiration Daily.
I recently heard a beautiful Kabbalah that Rav Itche Meir Morgenstern recommended for Elul. It's something that I had never heard before, but it seems to resonate with the people that I've shared it with. And that is that he said that every day a person should be mikabel upon himself to talk to Hashem for a minute or two. Not during davening, not during tehillim, not words of prayer in the classic sense of the word, but rather just schmooze with Hashem. Tell him about what's going on. Tell him where you could use help. Just talk to him.
There's a famous story that is brought by Rabbi Dr. Twersky in his book, Generation to Generation. There was a man who used to stand at the Kosel, a Sefardish a jew. He looked like a simple Jew, but he wasn't so simple at all. One day Rabbi Twersky was walking up to the Kosel and he didn't mean to impose, and he certainly didn't want to be sneaky, but he was so curious. He saw this man standing at the Kosel, and he seemed to be having these long conversations and Teffilos with Hashem. He was wondering what it was all about. One day he was standing nearby, and he overheard the man say, Oh, I'm sorry. I think I told that to you yesterday. In those few innocent words He had encountered someone who was really talking to the Ribono Shel Olam like you would talk to your friend. Ani l'dodi v'dodi li. Hashem is our G-d. He is our beloved. And just as you would schmooze with your spouse, and you would tell him or her, devarim shel ma b'kach, really sometimes just meaningless things because you want to talk to your spouse. You want to share your life, share your day in no less a manner. Hashem awaits those conversations as well. Try it. Yeshiva Ateres Shimon

L’Maaseh The Kovno Rav, Rav Yitzchok Elchonon Spector, was the Poseik HaDor, the leading Halachic authority of the generation, in the early 1900’s. He was once speaking with someone, when there was a knock his door. A student came in to tell Rav Yitzchok Elchonon of great news, that an older Bachur had finally got engaged.
The Rav was thrilled to hear the great news and thanked the boy who told him. A few minutes later, there was another knock on the door and someone else told the Rav the same news. The Rav was once again thrilled and thanked him. A few moments later, the same occurrence repeated itself, and then yet once more, someone again came to tell the Rav the good news. Finally, the man asked the Rav, “Rebbe, please explain to me. The same news was told to you four times over, yet each time you heard it, you reacted as if it was the first time!?”
Rav Yitzchok Elchonon answered, “They come to tell me the news for they know I will be happy to hear it. This makes them happy, so it’s worth their efforts. If I don’t act surprised to hear the news, their efforts would have been for nothing, and I would have deprived them of their joy. Therefore, I allow them to have the pleasure of informing me of the exciting news!” Torah U'Tefillah
