-
Sophie Calle takes over four floors of the Musée Picasso in Paris with a unique exhibition

The artist commemorates the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death in her own way. Sophie Calle’s exhibition takes a curious, quirky look at a selection of Picasso’s most emblematic works, whose images or memories the artist summons through a personal narrative that is laid out on the museum’s first floor.

In this exhibition, which unfolds independently of Picasso on each floor and takes on a deliberately retrospective character, Sophie Calle explores some of her central themes, such as blindness and death, using archives and writings as sources and raw materials for her work.

Rising to the challenge of the invitation, Calle interrogates the critical reception of her work and her concern to pass it on to future generations.

We are pleased to announce the first group show at Perrotin Seoul Dosan Park.

The exhibition features work by MADSAKI, Takashi Murakami, Lee Bae, Paola Pivi, Josh Sperling and Joaquín Boz.

The title ‘Zero, Ten’ derives from ‘The Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0,10’ which heralded the beginning of Russian avant-garde painting. ‘0’ means to break from the preceding custom and norms of paintings and return to the basics. ‘10’ is a number that symbolizes completion and perfection. This exhibition encompasses the work of various artists who explore the essence of painting.

On view from December 2 to December 23.

Shim Moon-Seup’s solo exhibition is now open at Perrotin Paris!

'Shim Moon-Seup was born in 1943 in Tongyeong, a peninsula surrounded by islands on Korea’s south coast.

Although he graduated from Seoul National University in 1965, participated in numerous international exhibitions, and, since 1992, has divided his time between Paris and his hometown, this pioneer of contemporary Korean sculpture remains deeply influenced by the maritime environment where his artistic vocation first emerged. The formative proximity to nature and the cyclical movement of the tides continue to inspire his sculptures, installations, and paintings to this day.

For Shim Moon-Seup, the paintings are not fundamentally different from his sculptures. The combination of large-format works, in which viewers can immerse themselves, and simple compositions based on identical, repeated gestures suggests the existence of a space beyond the canvas. The brushstrokes and the exact repetition of movements express the artist's individuality – his spirit (Gi in Korean) – while evoking the cosmological cycles that supposedly animate our world. This repetitive element also evokes the waves that had such a lasting influence on the artist's sensibility. The dominant blue tones are a reference to his past and the sea, which he carries within him, and which have taught him to both look at nature and collaborate with it.' - Mael Bellec

The show is on view through January 13, 2024.

Aryo Toh Djojo’s ‘Over my head’ is now open at Perrotin Tokyo

Toh Djojo employs an airbrushing technique as a central facet of his artistic process, skillfully incorporating principles of design, such as visual perspective, color theory, and an examination of the formal elements of art, to experiment and shape his paintings.

At our Tokyo gallery, the artist debuts a new body of paintings alluding to his continued interest in UFO sightings and the socio-political discourses that have arisen throughout history as a result of these events.

We are pleased to present a solo presentation of new works by Nikki Maloof at West Bund in Shanghai, marking her first presentation with the gallery in Asia.

For Nikki Maloof, painting is a way to convey the experience of existing in the world—the light, the dark, and all the shadows in between.
Her language is figuration: she started out with portraits of individual animals, progressing onto still lifes and, most recently, domestic interiors and landscapes populated with a mix of creatures—human and non-human; alive, dead, and inanimate.

Xie Qi’s ‘Shame of Intimacy’ is now open at Perrotin Hong Kong!

“Whatever intimacy might present itself, it is the intimacy of the painterly gaze. The eroticism that these paintings speak of is the eroticism between the artist herself and her canvas.

Thus, in the end, what gets exposed in Xie Qi’s work, is not a body-to-be-shamed, but the intimacy of the creative act. As spectators, we might feel embarrassed by this, because this intimacy is almost too strong, too close up in our faces. But there is no shame here, at least not in my mind, for Xie Qi is in control of what she gives us to see, even if she lays herself bare. And it is our choice to receive these paintings with a loving eye. It is our choice to receive these gifts.” — Ruth Noack, curator and art historian

'Shame of Intimacy’ is on view through December 2 at our Hong Kong gallery.

Two new exhibitions open at Perrotin New York today 🥂

‘Rhapsody in Blue’ — Opting for a raw and vibrant gesture, Gérard Schneider’s approach to abstraction drew inspiration from music; his brushstrokes reflecting an intention to translate pure emotion into painting. Perrotin New York is pleased to present an exhibition of work by a pioneer of the Lyrical Abstraction movement.

‘The Reconciliation of Opposites’ — Jean-Michel Othoniel presents an enchanting exhibition of new works that explore the artist’s longstanding interest in the potent symbolism of flowers, unveiling an intimate series of lustrous paintings on white gold leaf. The artist’s monumental sculptures focus on materiality, specifically the dual strength and fragility of glass.

Join us for the opening tonight from 6 to 8pm at 130 Orchard!

‘In Laurent Grasso’s new exhibition, he reconsiders the landscape tradition by making the familiar unfamiliar, thereby allowing it to be freshly perceived. It is with great sorrow that we learned today of the death of artist Park Seo-Bo at the age of 92. All our thoughts are with his family and friends.
For many years, every time I visited Seoul, my visits to Park were marked by the impression of great privilege. That of meeting a great master who influenced several generations of artists. We will miss him very much.

'Takashi Murakami: Unfamiliar People — Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego' the first solo exhibition by Takashi Murakami 村上隆 in San Francisco is on view at the Asian Art Museum

The larger-than-life paintings and sculptures in 'Murakami: Monsterized' use monsters as a central motif to address the complicated nature of the world around us. The artist’s recent works suggest that our rapidly changing and increasingly digital landscape is populated by monsters — whether harmful or helpful — many of which humans have created and perhaps even become.

Several new works created for this exhibition find Murakami responding to a social environment marked by a global pandemic and a shift toward virtual interaction.

‘After the pandemic started, some people who used to live normal lives started to loudly voice strong opinions, or turned out to be vaccine conspiracy theorists, or started attacking others out of an astonishingly intense sense of fear. Some who seemed to be absolutely kind had abruptly changed, and I felt that it was impossible to understand human beings just by looking at the surface.' – Takashi Murakami in Wallpaper Magazine

'Nocturnal Ballads' revolves around themes from Romantic literature, poetic forest imagery, the elusiveness of dreams, and nocturnal tales.

Despite their diverse conceptual backgrounds, the works share a lyrical, Romantic approach, echoing ancient stories, myths, and legends that flourish in the liminal and mysterious space of night. Dissolving the boundary between fantasy and reality, these contemporary stories carve their paths through the dark woods of the imagination.

Now open at Perrotin Shanghai: Gabriel Rico's 'Consider how long you have been doing the same thing!'

Rico’s body of work encompasses a diverse array of textures and materials, each comprising the artist’s conception of the contemporary cosmos.

These elements playfully interact with the light that permeates throughout the gallery. Through specific cues in each piece, the artist proposes a twisted path along the exhibition. This path reveals numerous possibilities for exploration, allowing each visitor to craft their own narrative.

On view until October 26

The exhibition of works on paper by Georges Mathieu at 2bis avenue Matignon is now open

‘Georges Mathieu, the founder of Lyrical Abstraction, is internationally renowned for his dynamic, sometimes monumental works on canvas. In France, he is also known as a total artist, working in a wide variety of fields, from posters to medals and coins, from Gobelins tapestries to Sèvres porcelain and even avant-garde architecture.

Amidst the vast array of media and techniques, his works on paper, although often exhibited alongside his paintings, have rarely been the subject of a separate exhibition. Yet they deserve special consideration, not only to showcase Mathieu's protean talent but because of their unique qualities that demonstrate the evolution of his style in parallel with his paintings.’ – Édouard Lombard, Director Comité Georges Mathieu

Our Germaine Richier exhibition opens today at Perrotin 8 Matignon. Come and join us for the opening at 5pm.

Sculptor of metamorphoses and the first female artist to have an exhibition at the Musée National d’Art Moderne during her lifetime, Germaine Richier had a dazzling career.

Born in 1902 in Grans, in the Bouches-du-Rhone region, the artist found in the flora and fauna of her native Provence the naturalist inspiration that runs through a corpus nonetheless centered on the human figure.

Tavares Strachan’s ‘Do and Be’ is now open at Perrotin Seoul!

“Not knowing and, more importantly, not seeing are formally and conceptually integral to Strachan’s multidisciplinary practice. Over the past decade and a half, the New York-based Bahamian artist has traversed dusty archives and distant lands to uncover marginalized histories and confront the limitations that structure our experience of the world.

One of the recurring figures in Strachan’s oeuvre is the Jamaican activist and entrepreneur Marcus Garvey (1887–1940). An advocate of Pan-Africanism who was influential between the First and Second World Wars, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League in Kingston before relocating to Harlem in New York City, where he also published the widely circulated Negro World newspaper and ran the transatlantic Black Star Line. It is a 1920s flyer for this shipping company, exhorting Black working men to “DO and BE,” that gave Strachan’s current show its title.” — Ophelia Lai

The show will be on view through October 7th.
