Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, General Gordon Granger read aloud General Order Number 3, declaring that in Texas, “in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation nearly three years earlier. The Thirteenth Amendment would be adopted later that same year, in December.
On June 19th, we take the time to reflect and honor those that have marched and fought throughout the struggle to elevate Black voices and secure equal rights. To New Visions students, families and educators, and to all Black and Brown students, we say again: your lives matter. Your dreams matter. You deserve the chance to achieve those dreams. We stand with you and we will keep working every day until we see a better tomorrow.⠀
June is PRIDE MONTH! During this time, we celebrate the lengths we’ve come as a country, recognize the people in the LGBTQ community and our allies who fight and continue to fight for equality and understand the work that remains to be done for the LGBTQ+ community.
