Today is the third annual International SEL Day. SEL Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the importance and impact of social and emotional learning in our schools and our work. In a year filled with uncertainties, our schools and support staff have demonstrated tremendous resilience. This is our moment to reflect and celebrate how we have deepened our commitment to holistic wellbeing for all members of our community.

In celebration of SEL Day, our New Visions team members wanted to share their SEL advice to high schoolers!

Today marks the beginning of Black History month - another opportunity to understand Black histories, going beyond stories of racism, segregation, and slavery, and to spotlight Black achievement.

It's always the right time to stand up for what is right: today, tomorrow, throughout Black History Month, and all year round.

This year, New Visions Charter High Schools will celebrate ten years since the founding of our first two schools. In the decade since, our network has grown to ten schools in three boroughs, helping thousands of students discover their passions and follow their path to success in high school and beyond.

We will be celebrating throughout the school year, sharing highlights of our journey, the accomplishments of our schools, and the committed teams who make this all possible. Follow along through our social media as we celebrate this milestone.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, General Gordon Granger read aloud General Order Number 3, declaring that in Texas, “in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation nearly three years earlier. The Thirteenth Amendment would be adopted later that same year, in December.
On June 19th, we take the time to reflect and honor those that have marched and fought throughout the struggle to elevate Black voices and secure equal rights. To New Visions students, families and educators, and to all Black and Brown students, we say again: your lives matter. Your dreams matter. You deserve the chance to achieve those dreams. We stand with you and we will keep working every day until we see a better tomorrow.⠀

June is PRIDE MONTH! During this time, we celebrate the lengths we’ve come as a country, recognize the people in the LGBTQ community and our allies who fight and continue to fight for equality and understand the work that remains to be done for the LGBTQ+ community.
