I am echoing what my colleagues say every day. Opera is alive and very well. "Lucia" with Opera Orlando was one of the finest performances I have ever seen anywhere. Marnie Breckenridge took my breath with her voice and acting. Ben Gulley sang with so much passion and has a big, gorgeous, voice. Gabriel Preisser infused every note of Enrico with seething anger and eventually great sorrow. His singing and characterization are world class. Zaikuan Song thrilled the audience with his huge, beautiful, true bass voice. The Orlando Symphony Orchestra played beautifully and Robert Moody was incredible in the pit. Orlando Ballet added a gorgeous dance (en pointe) during the harp solo before "Regnava." They also were "White Walkers" in the Mad Scene- genius. Grant Preisser directed this with love, care and DRAMA.
If you can go on Sunday, get there.
Also, I made a new friend, Bob Quintana. He is a great guy.
