"Our worshiping community is an acquired family of sorts. And indeed, many in this church look out for each other, help each other, love each other, as a family would. No matter how many are sitting in the pews or how many pledges we have, the familial relationships among us might be one of the best measures of a healthy parish doing what a church should do." Last Sunday, the Rev. Canon Marie A. Tatro preached on the Jesus' cryptic words about family, blasphemy, and forgiveness in Mark 3:20–35. Based on the Gospel reading Mark 2:23–3:6, in which Jesus declares that "the sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath," the Rev. Deacon Brendan F. Nee preached on being risk-takers for Jesus' radical message of love and care. "Jesus is calling us into that risky imperfection of human love and care. We can't have certainty and live out the gospel when it comes to our human relationships, because they're unpredictable. Because life throws things at us that we never would have expected. Because circumstances arise in our human lives that require us to second-guess what we've always taken to be true." "That's what the Spirit is. The Spirit is God's love, all those disco balls bouncing light around, shining on each other, shining on the world, reflecting back to God. That's the Spirit. It's all sparkle." On Trinity Sunday, the Rev. Dr. Craig D. Townsend preached on the holy mystery of God's three-in-one nature. "We cannot see God, and yet we are called to bear the fruit of God's love that casts out fear and makes it impossible to hate the fellow humans we can see." On Sunday, the Rev. Canon John E. Denaro preached on what it means to love and abide in such tumultuous times, especially in light of the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza and the swell of peaceful student protests across the United States.
