Now more than ever, the Smile family stands in solidarity with those fighting for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and the countless other victims of systemic racism and violence in this country. We are committed to listening, supporting, donating, and educating ourselves and others. If you aren’t protesting, we ask you that you join us in this commitment. Call your representatives, sign petitions, donate to bail-out funds, support Black businesses, have conversations with your non-Black friends and family… this will be an ongoing battle and the amount of ways in which we can all help dismantle injustice are innumerable. And if you are protesting, we hope you stay safe and thank you for doing the difficult work. Link in bio for a list of resources.

Small independent businesses are the backbone of our economy and the lifeblood of our nation -- but we are buckling under the pressure of the COVID-19 health crisis. It turns out that under the crushing weight of this pandemic’s economic fallout, and small businesses need help now. But the question is, who needs that support most desperately - the Big Mac or the Small Fry?

The Keeping Workers Paid + Employed Act (a section of the COVID-19 stimulus bill) was originally intended to support small independent businesses. Amidst deadlock and partisan disputes, last-minute legislative changes opened up federal funding to larger franchisees -- the big businesses that are newly qualified will take more than half of the allocated support provided. Masquerading these franchisees as small businesses will pull the rug out from under independent bars and restaurants.

This bill is headed to the House -- at this point, we need to focus on our employees and how we can function with 8-weeks of payroll support. Now is the time to organize and more clearly define the needs of actual small independent businesses. These types of restaurants are uniquely valuable to our communities and our economy, but we are among the most vulnerable in this public health crisis. As independent voices we barely register a blip on the radar, but speaking with one voice we will show our leaders that .

On Monday and Wednesday, we closed the doors to our restaurant on Bond Street and our two To Go locations for the good of our staff and the greater community. The Smile has been serving customers for almost 11 years, and Smile to Go has been doing the same for nearly 8 years. Since day one, our staff has been a family.

With the uncertainty of the length of the closures as well as the extent of the government relief, we are turning to our customers to help provide support to our incredible team.

If you frequent any of our locations, or simply want to help, we would be so grateful. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and look forward to serving you again soon,
The Smile / Smile To Go
