Opening Reception: Thursday, June 20, 2024, 6-8 pm

Inspired by the natural illumination from a skylight and his collection of variously colored objects, John Lee's paintings become deep meditations on his workspace. Painted from direct observation over many months, these interior views of his studio are primarily "discovered" while working — painted as the artist finds them, with little to no editing or composing of the objects.
The artist abjures any literary, symbolic, or metaphorical interpretations:
"The paintings are about a particular feeling for light, space, and color, beginning with a strong sunny day filtering through both the skylight and the green trees outside. I sense strong Fauvist-like colors, and mix them down to express not just color but also the weighted planes of the room and the objects."
Seeking to compress "... the impressionistic blush of color and light into a weighty Fauvism," Lee's paintings examine more than the vivid workings of light; they wrestle with the challenges behind any deeply convincing representation.
The opening reception will be held 6-8pm on Thursday, June 20.
