Yesterday, YIVO's sound archivists visited the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts to make a donation of a few precious wax cylinders, that didn't fit into our collection (see previous post and list of YIVO's Jewish cylinders in comments).
They were treated to a tour of the sound recording and music collection, as well as the digitization labs by Assistant Curator of Music & Recorded Sound Jessica Wood and her colleagues.
One amazing artifact they were shown was a disc engraved on an X-ray from their Benedict Stambler collection. Such recordings were bootleg copies of censored recordings made in the post-war years in the Soviet Union.

Continuing Evolution: Yiddish Folksong Today Festival is a concert that features a showcase of contemporary artists engaged with Yiddish folksong material collected as a part of YIVO’s 1973-1975 Folksong Project: East European Jewish Folksong in its Social Context. Performing artists include Eléonore Biezunski, Carol Freeman, Sarah Gordon, Janet Leuchter, Jerry Marcus, Sarah Myerson, Ethel Raim, Miryem-Khaye Seigel, Ilya Shneyveys, Lorin Sklamberg, Josh Waletzky, and Eléonore Weill.

We will discuss where and how to find primary sources (such as sheet music, books, and recordings) and how to use them for your research. We will focus on online as well as print resources. We’ll explore common questions and issues that arise in Yiddish language research, and strategies for dealing with them. Presented by the Dorot Jewish Division and co-sponsored by the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, and the Klezmer Institute.

The YIVO Sound Archive
The Max and Frieda Weinstein Archive of YIVO Sound Recordings houses and makes available thousands of recordings on piano rolls, 78-, 45- and 33rpm discs, open-reel and cassette tapes, compact discs and mp3s. The collection, which includes both music and spoken word recordings, also maintains a reference library and other materials related to the history and study of Jewish music. The earliest item in the Archive is a single-sided commercial 78rpm disc dating from 1901.
YIVO’s collection of recorded Jewish music is one of the most extensive and frequently consulted in the world. It embraces all genres, including:
