The Rutgers Street Church
Henry Rutgers and his brother served in the Revolutionary War and in 1798 he donated land to a Presbyterian congregation which then would become the corner of Henry and Rutgers Streets. It was known as the Rutgers Street Church, or “The kirk on Rutgers Farm,” and opened its doors for worship on May 13, 1798. The New-York Tribune later described it as “a frame building, surmounted by a cupola containing a clock and a bell.
Henry Rutgers did not have to think too hard about what to name the streets surrounding the Church. He named the wide street on which his mansion stood Rutgers Street and the Intersecting street Henry Street (both after himself. Oh, but he did not stop there. He named a nearby street Catherine Street for Catherine Rutgers, and Bancker Street, named for Henry’s son-in-law.
Under his influence the church continued to grow and a new house of worship became necessary. The new building at Rutgers and Henry Streets was erected. “The new building” was a ashlar stone church that was erected on the site of the old wooden structure between 1841 and 1842
April 21, 1842, the New-York Tribune wrote “The new Presbyterian church in Rutgers-street, will be dedicated to-day at 4 o’clock P.M.”
By the 1930s based on where people had settled around the city, the neighborhood was still largely composed of Italian and Irish families.
Today, if you were to stand outside and look at the building, the nearly 175-year old church is unchanged. Its four clocks, which are considered the oldest hand-wound clocks in the city, keep time over the much-changed Rutgers Street.
The church offers Masses in Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Spanish each Sunday; and Spanish throughout the week—a testimony to the wide cultural diversity of the 21st century Rutgers Street.

St. John's Burying Ground was a cemetery in Greenwich Village in the 1800’s. It is now a park.
It was connected with St. John's Chapel of Trinity Parish from 1834 to 1898 (many of the burials predate the cemetery's acquisition by the church.) It is estimated that about 10,000 people were buried there until 1860.
In 1897, the cemetery was made into a public park by the city and only about 250 bodies were removed. The new park was called St. John's Park, which then became Hudson Park, and it is currently called James J. Walker Park.
The only remains of the cemetery is the firemen's monument. This was erected by Engine Company 13 and dedicated to 2 firemen who were killed in a fire in 1834.

Old lampposts are our favorite! This one is in Madison Square Park.
Did you know that the first ornamental street lamps in NYC were installed in September 1892 on 5th Avenue between Washington Square Park and 59th Street. At that time the Edison Illuminating Company provided the electricity for them. Twin lamppost began appearing throughout the City starting in 1913.
