How cute, right? Baby goats!

What can a playful and curious perspective bring to your pilates workout?
I’m sure the last thing you think about when you see a kid is core strength. You probably think nimble, quick, alert, malleable and springy.
That’s my approach to teaching pilates exercises.
With a secret weapon.
(Okay it’s not that big a secret but it’s an often overlooked or ignored skill.)
Unlike a goat you weren’t born with this ability. You developed it gradually over time, through trial and error and experience.
Your ability to sense yourself - accurately and honestly - is key to being able to move safely, skillfully and dynamically.
Join me at 6pm NYC-time on Tuesdays for a carefully curated blend of dynamic stability.

The Role of Rest
Aim to balance your work with pleasure – it’s more than a luxury. Your body requires a balance of both activities (or lack of activity) to maintain good health. Stimulating and demanding activities require the sympathetic nervous system to respond – ‘fight or flight’. While activities that calm the system enhance the para-sympathetic response – the ‘rest and digest’ effect. Tuning into your physical self is a perfect way to bring on that restorative phase. Whether you want to improve the quality of your sleep or the intensity of your play - being able to down-regulate is critical to your overall health.
“Two states of existence are commonly distinguished; waking and sleeping. We shall define a third state: awareness. In this state the individual knows exactly what he is doing while awake.”
“Learning to inhibit unwanted contractions of muscles that function without, or in spite of, our will, is the main task in coordinated action.”
“To learn we need time, attention, and discrimination; to discriminate we must sense. This means that in order to learn we must sharpen our powers of sensing, and if we try to do most things by sheer force we shall achieve precisely the opposite of what we need.”
– Moshe Feldenkrais

80% of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lives. Conventional advice is to stabilize the core. But when you look at the statistics only half of those suffering lower back pain get relief from physical therapy or core strengthening.
The problem is that most of these treatments are one-size-fits-all. The protocols aren’t tailored to the individual.
That’s where the Feldenkrais Method is different.
Rather than copying, or making the same shapes as illustrated in a manual or video, Feldenkrais lessons ask you to feel your way into a bespoke version of the movement.
Adapting and adjusting while paying keen attention to your comfort is key for changing your pain.
An 8-week Feldenkrais study showed that it leads to decreased pain and perceived disability, while. Increasing function and endurance.
Check out the article that exposes the fiction about what most people believe is the cause of their back pain.
“The Myth of Core Stability,” Professor Eyal Lederman, Physiotherapist, Ph.D., and Doctor of Osteopathy in London.

What do you do when the old system and beliefs no longer serve you?
🏛📜 🏛📜
Do you question commitment and skill or do you reconsider the value of those original ideas?
🤔🧠 🤔🧠
Orit had always believed that hard work and perseverance were all that were needed for success. Her discipline and dedication to working her body rigorously daily seemed to have backfired on her. But in her darkest hour she remembered what she had learned in my class. I’ll let her tell the story.

We started meeting online for twenty minutes every morning of the week. It was a present for me. Encouraged a regimen of morning routine and taught me how to better observe the body. And observe it in ways that are different from the precise and important observations I acquired in the six years of Iyengar yoga. They too are my companions during this pandemic.
Last week my back gave up for some reason (most likely overdoing In yoga...), and after a few days of minimal movement I started doing some of the movements that I remembered from our work together. And those, together with your voice in my head - don’t work in pain, listen to your body, experiment with different versions... - made the difference. I suddenly feel that those routines settled in my brain in a way that I can start using them on my own.
The freedom of movement that came back today after about 40 minutes of your exercises made me feel mobile again!
So thank you for patiently implementing these ideas in my head!

🤨❓How are your old ideas really just outdated beliefs that are holding your back❓
