In Diego's view, Squarespace stands out as a CMS platform because of its exceptional customization capabilities. Unlike rigid template systems that offer limited flexibility, Squarespace gives users exceptional control. Although platforms like HubSpot offer templates, they do not provide the -friendly customization experience that Squarespace excels at. Squarespace's prebuilt layouts are not only impressive, but they also serve as a robust foundation for creating highly tailored and visually appealing websites.

Diego explains that Squarespace is a powerful tool for creating online spaces, especially for those without deep knowledge. It uses like Wix, but its limitations can be both good and bad. Designers used to having complete control might find Squarespace's interface restrictive and limit their creativity. However, for business owners and people who want a balance between good looks and usability, Squarespace is a strong platform that produces great results without the complexity of professional design software.

Selecting the right for a project can be challenging. What works best often depends on perspective. solutions like Wix can be incredibly convenient for many, making it difficult to justify exploring other options. However, from a different angle, custom design needs might dictate a completely different approach. For instance, marketing or software agencies often require a level of customization beyond what DIY platforms can offer. From Carlos's perspective, being familiar with a platform significantly influences the decision-making process. Users often prefer to stick with familiar systems, even if it means compromising on design or functionality. The comfort of using a known platform, such as Wix or another platform, can outweigh the potential benefits of switching to a Headless or more complex system. In such cases, users may choose to use workarounds or accept minor compromises to avoid the learning curve associated with a new platform.

Diego emphasizes the importance of management and when choosing a platform. For example, platforms like Hootsuite require separate subscriptions for social media management, which increases overall costs. On the other hand, HubSpot offers comprehensive marketing suites, while Wix provides a more integrated approach. Wix's inclusion of email marketing capabilities is a valuable asset for businesses looking for an all-in-one solution. Although specialized platforms like HubSpot may offer more advanced marketing features, Wix's approach can be convenient for many businesses.

Diego warns us that the CMS landscape is diverse. Many platforms focus solely on content management, while others offer additional functionalities. For example, Behance, primarily a social network for creatives, also provides website-building capabilities. This platform seamlessly integrates with a photographer's existing workflow, especially those already using Adobe Photoshop. By leveraging Behance, photographers can easily showcase their work and establish an online presence without requiring a separate CMS.

Wix's new music feature represents a deliberate effort to target a specific audience. This development is noteworthy, considering the platform's overarching focus on broader user groups. Similar to the photography niche, musicians and artists rely on online platforms to showcase their work. This feature indicates that Wix is fully aware of the potential of this market and is actively taking steps to meet their specific needs.

Based on his experience, Diego states that the choice of e-commerce platforms depends on the stage and complexity of the business. In the initial stages, a simple website with a contact form and project gallery can be easily created using a platform like Wix. As the business grows and e-commerce becomes essential, Wix may still be sufficient for basic product sales. However, for more complex products or a highly customized e-commerce design, alternative platforms may be necessary to overcome the limitations of template-based systems.

When creating visual presentations using DIY solutions like Wix, we use templates and drag and drop items onto the canvas. However, Carlos and Diego warn that while it's easy to create things quickly, if you need something beyond the tools or templates provided by Wix, you may be unable to do it or need complex custom coding. However, these platforms do allow easy drag-and-drop functionality, and sticking within the platform's capabilities ensures a great experience.

As a designer, Diego believes that when comparing the flexibility of Wix and other website platforms in terms of design and functionality for both users and marketers, Wix and other DIY platforms can be quite limiting. For example, brands like Dropbox, Digital Ocean, or BH Photography wouldn't choose Wix to build their websites, even though Wix theoretically supports e-commerce and similar functionalities. These brands require a level of complexity that Wix cannot achieve.

Alex highlights the considerations for enterprise CMS selection. Large companies with complex needs require a system that scales to accommodate hundreds of users and high-volume traffic. Security becomes paramount, as legal concerns and user data protection are top priorities. While headless CMS offers strong security compared to traditional options, Alex emphasizes the overarching theme: selecting the best tool to address the specific challenges of an enterprise website.

Here is an example of a scenario for CMS on Enterprise: Let's say this needs to be used by potentially hundreds of people. We are making around 100 million a year or something big like that. And they have very specific enterprise problems, right?

These enterprise companies need someone who understands enterprise and has people on hand to handle those enterprise problems, respond to those requests, and have the kind of security that the enterprise requires. Because now you're dealing with a whole bunch of lawyers and a whole bunch of user data, and security becomes a really big issue.

That's one thing where headless is really nice because it is very secure, especially compared to WordPress or something of that sort, where you are more vulnerable to attacks. The question of enterprise is one where you really have.

Let's Talk CMSs E5: Exploring Headless vs Traditional CMS with Alex Trost from Prismic CMS https://go.quo.agency/4c47awb

06/24/2024

It is unclear whether the differences in editing workflows can be attributed solely to headless versus monolithic or traditional CMS. At Prismic, a feature called 'Releases' has been developed. This feature allows users to create or modify content and schedule its release on a specific day. This feature is unique to Prismic and is not available in other CMSs, regardless of whether they are headless or traditional. However, some other CMSs may offer similar features. Ultimately, the choice of tool depends on the specific requirements of the project.

If you are a one-person team, you probably only need a versatile approach to managing your business. You should focus on doing a decent job in various areas, while also specializing in your core business. For instance, if you're selling t-shirts, the performance of your CMS might not be the most crucial aspect in the beginning. Instead, your priority should be creating high-quality shirts and gaining some traction.

As your business grows, you'll reach a point where your current CMS, like Wix, may no longer meet your needs and becomes a bottleneck. At this stage, it's essential to switch to a more efficient platform, as faster website loading times can lead to increased sales.

The current trend in software development emphasizes composability, which involves using specialized tools that can be easily combined to create a customized solution, similar to building with Legos. The advantage of this approach is that if any of the components no longer meet your needs, or the price becomes too high, it can be swapped out for another one without having to replace the entire system. For example, an analytics platform that is no longer serving your needs can be removed and a new one added, while everything else remains the same. This allows for future-proofing your system and avoiding vendor lock-in.

Looking into the future is important when deciding what CMS system to choose for your website. It's common to add new functionalities to a website down the road that were not previously considered, which is a good sign of growth. Investing in a CMS system that is future proof is crucial, similar to buying a car that will last for many years. You don't want to waste money replacing it in a year or two. Therefore, it's important to consider the long-term benefits when investing in a new website.

Diego learned the importance of using the right tool for the right scenario a few years ago when he attempted to change the SSD module on an iMac. Being a bit of a nerd, he used a screwdriver that wasn't meant for the iMac and began to open it up. Despite having a store nearby where he could buy the proper tool, he didn't want to go there and spent 20 minutes struggling with the first screw. Unfortunately, he ended up scratching the computer and damaging it. It was a beautiful iMac and he regretted not using the right tool for the job. Eventually, he went to the store, bought the proper screwdriver and within two seconds realized how important it is to have the proper tool for a job.

Prismic provides a range of tools to facilitate the efficient creation of marketing sites with full-page components known as slices. These tools enable editing teams to easily create marketing and landing pages. Prismic specializes in Next.js and React, making it an ideal choice for developers looking to build apps. This allows developers the freedom to leverage their expertise and make informed decisions tailored to specific needs, resulting in better outcomes.

To address developer freedom and specialization, it's important to consider the analogy of WordPress being a Swiss army knife. While Swiss army knives offer a variety of tools, they may not excel in any specific area. Similarly, WordPress may not be the best choice for specialized tasks. For instance, just as a chef in a five-star kitchen wouldn't use a Swiss army knife to prepare a delicate salmon fillet, using a specialized tool for a specific job may be more appropriate. While Swiss army knives are convenient for general use, they may not always be the best choice for specialized tasks.
