Happy autumn! Say hello to our 11th annual Gary Leib Halloween window display, now a memorial to Gary 🙏🎃
Preorder out Anti-Drug Propaganda zine now! We need 200 preorders to afford the printing cost 😬
The result of a year’s research, this zine compiles real documents published by the federal government and other entities to warn people of the dangers of drug use. Much of the content interestingly mimics the style of underground comics and counterculture imagery, but with hilariously opposite messaging. A visual feast with a mind-bending undercurrent of subterfuge.
The zine is nearly completed and currently available for preorder. We’re planning a thick 100-page full-color magazine gleaned from extremely hard-to-find sources, with uncoated paper and glossy cover. Compiled and designed by Gabe Fowler at Desert Island.
This is a preorder and will ship in August

Some selections from “Let’s Talk About Goof Balls and Pep Pills (Including Tranquilizers and LSD)”, 1967, Texas Alcohol Narcotics Education, Inc. Illustrated by Dean Hurst. Could not find a copy of this pamphlet anywhere on earth, but had one! Will be included in our forthcoming Anti-Drug Propaganda zine.
Thanks to MVP Ray Martinez for sending these scans of an unbelievable anti-glue-sniffing pamphlet produced in 1972 by Texas Alcohol Narcotics Education, Inc. This will be included in our forthcoming “Drug Scare Propaganda” zine and we are still looking for material! Get in touch if you’re holding 😜
Have to share this insane anti-drug coloring book produced by the federal government in 1978. We’re planning a zine reprinting this and other vintage “drug scare” ephemera. If you have anything in your collection, please get in touch! Will trade zines for scans

Nate Garcia is doing an in-person signing at Desert Island this Friday for his wild new self-published comic Muscle Horse. We haven’t hosted events in a while so we’re keeping it short (7 to 8) but we’ll still get a bucket of beer. You’ll have to chug. Please come through and support this awesome artist from Philly.
Artist Jack Storie stopped by with some great recent original drawings, check ‘em out
Catherine Meurisse survived the Charlie Hebdo attacks in 2015, in which twelve cartoonists working for the magazine were killed by terrorists (slides 1-3). Rutu Modan is an Israeli illustrator and comic book artist who co-founded comics group Actus Tragicus and wrote “Exit Wounds” among others (slides 4-6). Elizabeth Colomba is a French painter of Martinique heritage known for her paintings of black people in historic settings (slides 7-9). All three artists are showing in the “3 Continents” exhibit at Philippe Labaune Gallery in Manhattan, including a live talk with the artists TODAY at 6pm. The talk is free at the gallery (NOT at Desert Island)

Insanely rare early Chris Ware tearsheets from The Daily Texan and Austin Chronicle from 1990. These are single sheets of newsprint from the pages of these ephemeral newspapers, many with material that has never been reprinted. We have a bunch in the store, acquired from a collector who painstakingly saved these while living in Austin at the time
FYI
Ayyy today is Desert Island’s 14th birthday! 🥳 No party this time but pretty psyched to enter our fifteenth. Thanks for your interest and support over the years ☺️
