Since their formation in 2019, the ascent of Canada's GUTVOID has been nothing if not meteoric. From their debut EP, Astral Bestiary, to the Four Dimensions of Auditory Terror four-way split shared with BLOOD SPORE, COAGULATE, and SOUL DEVOURMENT the following year - GUTVOID churned forth a Metal of Death that duly devoured the listener whole.
Still, massive potential lurked, and it arrived with one of the most fully-formed death metal debut albums in 2022's Durance of Lightless Horizons. Hailed far and wide upon its release and thereafter, Durance of Lightless Horizons simply intensified all the hallmarks of their sound - heaving, vertigo-inducing, spiraling like tar-thick smoke - and then sharpened them with a sterling sense of clarity, allowing their yearning, come-hither melodicism to evoke both melancholy and malice.

Based in the outskirts of Lisbon, PHENOCRYST was formed in early 2020 and features members from acts such as Archaic Tomb, Summon, Concilium and Necrobode.

With a firm foundation in death metal, mixed with influences like doom and some psychedelic vibes, they manage to illustrate soundscapes of disastrous, catastrophic, and annihilating volcanic and natural events. There are not many artists actually singing about this specific topic, if any, and therefore, the lyrical content is also something to explore. As such, the moniker PHENOCRYST is fitting.

Somber yet furious death metal, coiling with both inexorable dread & steely-eyed austerity, portentous and spacious in equal measure, and of course MOLTEN.

Back in 2017, CONTAMINATED loudly and sickly announced their arrival onto the international Death Metal map with their debut album, Final Man. At every angle and across every moment, Final Man spewed filth; song titles like "Mired in S**t," "Boneless Mass," and "Co-Opted Into Worthless Sludge" soundly proved that content met form.

In the past six years CONTAMINATED have only released two new songs, but now, finally, they return with a long-awaited second album, Celebratory Beheading. Upping the disgusting stakes yet again with its cover art, Celebratory Beheading literally explodes into being, blasting its filth fast and free before bringing in stomping-yet-angular breakdowns and a whole host of gut-churning intensity. In many ways, Celebratory Beheading's clearly-framed cover mirrors CONTAMINATED's sonic shift; whereas Final Man roamed within a malodorous murk, the Aussies' second full-length sharpens their attack with frightening efficiency. VALDRIN's most epic record yet: Throne of the Lunar Soul. The band's fourth album. At 11 songs in 74 minutes, this is truly a "double album" in the old-school sense - no fat or extraneous w**k, only labyrinthine songs threaded together in a manner most suiting to their Ausadjur Mythos.

Suitably, VALDRIN here nod to various points of their now-rich past while also pointing the way forward for ever-effervescent splendors that seem so authentically encased in 1997 that they sound impossibly fresher than anything around, "thawed" some 25 years later. With increased emphasis on dynamics as well as dramatic acoustic breaks & embellishments, the quartet leave no stone unturned in their arsenal, but each "stone" is crucial in its placement and serves a vivid purpose, such as the sometimes-subtle/sometimes-overt touch of mystical synth. Of course, VALDRIN can still race and rage with the best of any black and/or death metal band past or present, but even when the slipstreaming spires of sound threaten to become dizzying, the narrative of Throne of the Lunar Soul becomes that much deeper and more intense: not every story has a clear path, nor does it stay at the same pitch and meter. But rarely do stories ever get this grandiose and engaging. VALDRIN possess some strange (or at least elusive) magick, and in Throne of the Lunar Soul have they delivered a modern CLASSIC.

Gestated in 2023, STENCHED emanate from the sewers of the city of Monterrey, in northern Mexico. There, Adrián - the band's only member, who's also in Impending Rot and Excretory - released their first demo, Gorging on Mephitic Rot first digitally and then on CD.

The atmosphere of death and decay can be smelled from the first seconds of this recording. The muddy sound, the barbaric riffs, the gross art, and the primitive lyrics are a tribute to everything that surrounds the underground circuit where the death metal genre began in the '90s. STENCHED is about death, putridity, and gore: simple as that.

Now seeing release on vinyl and including two exclusive bonus tracks, Gorging on Mephitic Rot totals 24 minutes of filthy and heavy-as-f**k DEATH METAL! Caveman vocals and skull-crushing drums will remind maniacs of the first (and best) recordings of suchs bands as Demilich, Rottrevore, and early Undergang. FOLLOW THE STENCH

BLOOD HARVEST RECORDS is proud to present NECROVATION's LONG-awaited comeback recording, Storm the Void / Starving Grave, on 7" vinyl and cassette tape formats.

Formed in 2003, NECROVATION soon began their ascent of the Swedish death metal underground. A demo, a split, and an EP followed in quick succession, the latter two via BLOOD HARVEST, before some silence would pass. Alas, in 2008 did NECROVATION release their debut album, Breed Deadness Blood, via BLOOD HARVEST; it was soon hailed as modern classic for its unique synthesis of other eldritch death metal styles and textures and not merely just Swedeath. Another EP via BLOOD HARVEST followed two years later, signaling further growth by the power trio. That growth would perhaps reach its apotheosis with the release of their eponymous second album in 2012. Still very much "death metal" by design, NECROVATION here boldly integrated more traditional metal tropes - all without devolving into "death 'n' roll" pantomime - as well as other now-characteristic twists of weirdness.

Then...a deafening silence. Infrequent shows would happen over the ensuing decade, but plans for a new recording never materialized. Now, over a decade since Necrovation, NECROVATION return in enigmatic fashion with a two-song EP bearing the title Storm the Void / Starving Grave. The record's two component tracks are almost too perfectly titled: "Storm the Void" sounds very much like that, with tension-inducing stop/start angularity and a devouring thrust that would almost sound punk if it wasn't so molten and creepy; "Starving Grave" is indeed thirsty and miserable, with a woozy march that defies easy imbibement and then with-no-warning bursts of clawing speed and v***r trails of more simmering tension and repose. Together, these two tracks display NECROVATION honoring their past while pointing the way toward a very, VERY special future...if they, in fact, continue to stir their sulfurous cauldron. Only they know, but we are truly fortunate to receive Storm the Void / Starving Grave to begin the year. Either way, NECROVATION are eternal.

MYCELIUM is the work of Greg Edwards, who made a name in the black metal scene with Necronoclast during the first decade of the new millennium. With MYCELIUM, the Scotsman shifted gears to grimy, mushroom-obsessed death metal, and birthed the band's debut album, Scream Bloody Spore, just last year. While his tongue may seem firmly in cheek, it's rather a gallows-humor cleverness that guides his new creations, and it's taken powerful, pungent flight with the tongue-twisting follow-up Mycoticism (Disseminating the Propagules).

Those expecting some mid-era Carcass worship might be mildly disappointed by Mycoticism - but those who worship at the altar of ALL '90s death metal styles will find MYCELIUM a nuclear-mushroom trip worth taking. Once again recording everything himself, Edwards finds that elusive balance between the crushing and the clean, the crunch given gleam AND grime through propulsive death metal songwriting steeped equally in old New York, Stockholm, Tampa, and Finnish schools. Likewise, his lyricism finds absolute horror in the natural sciences, raising "nerdiness" to new levels of frightening, ferocious FUNGAL mania. At 37 minutes and across ten taut tracks, Mycoticism stuns with its compact attack, bridging blast and slam, vortex and beatdown, go-for-the-throat riffing and backwards crawl, all with utter aplomb.

The natural world around us is a brutal place, and MYCELIUM paints a putrescent picture of it with Mycoticism (Disseminating the Propagules).

Formed in 1996 in south Florida, HIBERNUS MORTIS were something of a cult fixture in the American death metal underground during the late '90s. A demo and a live album spread their name across that underground, and their debut album, The Existing Realms of Perpetual Sorrow, finally arrived in 2002. An unreleased demo was recorded a year later, but sadly, the name HIBERNUS MORTIS drifted into dust as lineup shuffles squandered the band's momentum.

But, of course, DEATH metal is eternal (life is not!), and now HIBERNUS MORTIS return from their graven slumber with a perfectly titled second album: The Monoliths of Cursed Slumber. With a revitalized lineup which features ex-Gigan guitarist Randy Piro and veteran drummer Cesar Placeres alongside OG members Ralf Varela (vox, guitar) and Yasser Morales (bass), HIBERNUS MORTIS here create a gutsf**king whirlwind of authentically '90s-vintage death metal. From downtuned gallop to cyclonic breakdown, from surge to slam, eerie dissonance to gutter-steeped doom, all pure 'n' proper bases are covered - and then brutally beaten down with cold, cruel precision. It'd be simple to say that The Monoliths of Cursed Slumber sounds like not a year has passed since the band's original but....well, that's pretty much the truth, and HIBERNUS MORTIS swarm and crush with an intensity that belies their age.

To restate the obvious, death metal is ETERNAL, and so is HIBERNUS MORTIS' muse. Awaken and enter The Monoliths of Cursed Slumber!

A grand entrance, to say the very least, Corporal Humiliation disgustingly displays VACUOUS DEPTHS at their rawest, most furious, and most uncomfortable. Not just typical Tampa death metal - although, undeniably, those are the band's roots - here VACUOUS DEPTHS drown in the influence of primitive late 1980s and early 1990s death metal as a (w)hole: only the most wretched and wrong sounds abound. A true DEATH METAL record for true death metal diehards, nevertheless do the power-trio put their own twist on the pummeling sounds from some of the most notorious scenes of Finland, Mexico, and South America. And at 10 songs in a murderously swift 34 minutes, Corporal Humiliation does exactly what it says on the tin and gets the f**k out before the perpetrators get caught. Evil deeds done dirt cheap? Truly, these are VACUOUS DEPTHS...

UNIVERSALLY ESTRANGED shocked and awed last year with the debut album, Reared Up in Spectral Predation. Widely acclaimed, blowing most minds who heard it, the mysterious entity created sci-fi-drenched death metal of a most malign and mesmerizing order. Now returning, little more than a year later, with an even more intimidating record.

Tellingly titled Dimension of Deviant Clusters, the band's second album lays forth an equally psychedelic landscape perhaps less Technicolor than its predecessor but arguably one more focused and fearless. The dazzling/disorienting bleeps 'n' bloops hinted at on the first album go full tilt here, singeing the synapses while tighter and more coiled song constructions surge forward with crushing clarity, all before going in impossibly angular directions which feel more like a fever dream rather than (un)conventional death metal. Dimension of Deviant Clusters is thus an album of stark contrasts: on one hand, some of UNIVERSALLY ESTRANGED's biggest, most engaging hooks, brought forth by seamless flow and exceptionally tight ex*****on; on the other hand, a total MINDF**K where riffs implode, backwards, and lazers shoot from every direction and tempos just tumble where they may. But, lest this all sound like a mess on paper, the mainman makes it all work lysergically, alchemically well, slam and skronk coming together and unveiling infinitely more possibilities for cosmonauts smitten with that first full-length. And if this is your first trip with UNIVERSALLY ENSTRANGED? Prepare to drop out, and drop in...deep, deep, deeper.

Science fiction becomes reality, and it's bonkers to behold. Death metal's DNA gets mangled once again, emerging more hideous and heightened than before, with UNIVERSALLY ESTRANGED's Dimension of Deviant Clusters.

The Toronto natives digitally released their debut EP, Astral Bestiary, later that autumn and came to the attention of BLOOD HARVEST, who then released it physically in 2020. And for good reason: ominously swarming, GUTVOID churned forth a world-eating Metal of Death that duly devoured the listener whole. More than being a three-song/24-minute soundworld unto itself, Astral Bestiary was a statement of intent from a bold-yet-pure DEATH METAL band.

Continuing that momentum was the even-bolder "Forbidden City Beneath the Crypt" digital single later in 2020, and the absolutely gelatinous Four Dimensions of Auditory Terror four-way split shared with BLOOD SPORE, COAGULATE, and SOUL DEVOURMENT, underlining GUTVOID's slimy, mind-mangling roots. The stage was thus set for the inevitable full-length debut...

And now it arrives bearing the ominous title Durance of Lightless Horizons. Immediately, this titanic recording bears the hallmarks of the still-fresh GUTVOID sound: heaving, vertigo-inducing, spiraling like tar-thick smoke. And yet, the sterling sense of clarity the quartet only hinted at before takes full flight here; Durance of Lightless Horizons entices and then entrances the listener with a yearning, come-hither sort of melodicism underpinned by both melancholy and malice. That the ex*****on has somehow tightened up even more - truly, GUTVOID's chops were exemplary before - allows these doom-drenched ruminations to cut sharper than ever, giving even the most stuck-in-quicksand passages to impart palpitating movement. But, rest assured that the songwriting across Durance of Lightless Horizons is an ever-so-patient one; linear to the very end, each passage conveys its sensation and then slithers into the next with a grace quite at odds with such a gutted sound.

It is not hyperbole to suggest that Durance of Lightless Horizons is one of the most fully-formed death metal debuts in recent memory. To celebrate its grand arrival, BLOOD HARVEST will also be doing a limited run of Astral Bestiary on vinyl with the previously digital-only "Forbidden City Beneath the Crypt" included as bonus. This is indeed the year of GUTVOID.
