Our Story

While Grotto opened its doors for the first time more than 30 years ago -- in December of 1985 -- our story starts long before. One of four boys growing up on 68th St. in Brooklyn in the 1960s owner Michael Tempera found his love of food when he was young. Watching his mother Rosemarie make gallons of her signature sauce through childhood and beyond he grew to love the art of cooking.

In the early days, Rosemarie would take the train from Brooklyn to New Street where she trained our kitchen staff on how to make thin chicken cutlets, meatballs, and her specialty a potato and egg hero.

Taking those family recipes -- and adding his own flare over the years -- Tempera says he’s reached the point where he can call his pizza “perfect.” (And the NY Daily News agrees).

A signature in the Financial District, The Grotto staff knows their customers by name and remembers their orders.
