๐Ÿ”ตโ€ขWe made the text included in the video using GPT-2, a predecessor to ChatGPT, which was the most advanced generative large-language Transformer model we could use at the time in 2021 - 2022. Wowww!โ˜„๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฅโœจ
The script was generated in collaboration with creative technologist Jared Katzman, by using an algorithm that mimicked an amalgamation of texts across three datasets: a collection of texts from the Cyberfeminism Index; a subset of Poetry books from Project Gutenberg; and a manuscript of poetry from the performer Candystore. Through alternating different prompts to the AI model and putting them in conversation, dominant narratives around labor and bodies become transfixed by the salacious and radical musings of the trained artificial-intelligent model. This unpredictable text has been then interpreted by Candystore โ€” uncertain and vulnerable โ€” while being filmed.

and Dan and (when some small metal is spun) explores the idea of meaning - or the lack there of - between the interplay of the AI model, the script, and Candystore's interpretation. Using an earlier ancestor to ChatGPT, language models have shown and complicated what meaning looks and feels like, as so much of the conversations around ChatGPT is a misattribution of meaning around the affect of language. These systems are getting better at parroting meaningful and coherent language, but then at the same time we are quickly exposed to how quickly the AI shows its incoherence and lack of understanding. This video piece analyzes these themes and reminds us of the importance and nuance of meaning.

When does it matter for humans to be coherent and incoherent (not to mention incoherence is a politically powerful tool in a world of oppressive rationalization)? And how do we remind ourselves that at the end of the day, humans are who give these systems and other people meaning - it doesn't exist in objective truth.' - Jared Katzman, Technologist

Sound Bath!
SAVE THE DATE!
March 11, 4-5:30pm

SONICSHANTI SOUND MEDITATION
with Sara Galassini

Sound and music have been universally used as portals to meditation and the divine world for thousands of years. The concept of healing through music is also very old; the ancient traditions of Egypt, Greece and Rome understood that vibration is the fundamental force of the universe. Thus they developed specific chants to heal and access altered states of consciousness. And today sound is also considered by science to be a very effective alternative treatment method.

A Sound Meditation or Sound Bath is a personal experience of active listening and relaxation, energetic and psychophysical harmonization. While immersing ourselves in the sound vibrations of chosen instruments we are guided through a personal journey towards the conscious self. In this space of active reception, the body and mind relax and naturally resonate with the energetic and restorative essence of bells, gongs, cymbals, tuning forks, flutes, percussions, chimes, the sounds of nature and the voice. Thus our body is entrained with the sound waves and our cells are nourished through a deep internal massage.

The experience is led by Sara Galassini, an interdisciplinary artist and performer recognized internationally, active for 25 years in the field of theater, dance and music and working in Italy and New York with La MaMa ETC Theater, the Great Jones Company and many other international companies and projects..
Since 2016 Sara has been a sound therapy practitioner that uses sound and voice as alternative medicines. She has graduated from the Sound and Music Institute of the Open Center of New York City studying with John Beaulieu, Silvia Nakkach and Alexandre Tannous among other teachers. Since 2019 he has regularly held harmonic bath sessions both in the USA, in Italy and virtually with her vibrational project SonicShanti.

The event is free and open to the public. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket and eye pillow if you are able.

We are still feeling euphoric from our February 18th opening. Come to the gallery to celebrate q***r love!

Q***r Love: Affection and Romance in Contemporary Art

Feb 18-April 6

Q***R artists show us stories of vulnerability, tenderness, and desire in the LGBTQIA community-a community of gay, le***an, bisexual, transgender, q***r, intersex, and asexual people.
The love stories they tell may be nuanced and reflective,
or cheerful and romantic. They interpret their feelings in ink and oil, on fabric and in photographs. They draw, they paint, they sew. No matter the method, they tell a strong message--the bonds between themselves as art creators and the ties of intimacy to those they cherish are enduring and recognized.
LGBTQIA artists often move from celebrating their love to proclaiming a place for q***r people within a larger society. In lushly beautiful images, they point to the growing cultural shift towards positive q***r representations across racial, age, religious, class, and gender identities.
For the first time, Lehman College Art Gallery and La MaMa Galleria, an organization with a long and rich history of q***r programming, join in artistic partnership to present an exhibition that celebrates LGBTQIA artists. The project embraces the rainbow of individual experiences, deeply felt and intensely human, that define our lives.

La MaMa Galleria is honored to present, Q***r Love: Affection and Romance in Contemporary Art
Opening Celebration: Saturday, February 18, 2023 6-8pm Free
Open to the public

The works featured in this two-part exhibition celebrating q***r carnality,
camaraderie, and passionโ€”are not rigid interpretations of our existence culled from the heterosexual imagination, but pictures and objects produced by every
stripe of LGBTQIA+ within our polychromatic, ever-expanding spectrum.

Q***r Love: Affection and Romance in Contemporary Art presents paintings, photographs, photographs, sculpture, video and multimedia work that show stories of vulnerability, tenderness, and desire in the LGBTQIA+ community โˆ’ a community of affirming gay, le***an, bisexual, transgender, q***r, intersex, and asexual people.

Works by 48 artists open February 2023 โ€“ symbolically on Valentineโ€™s Day, Tuesday February 14, at Lehman College Art Gallery in the Bronx, and on Saturday, February 18 at La MaMa Galleria in Lower Manhattan. Lehmanโ€™s artistic partnership with La MaMa Galleria, an organization with a long and rich history of q***r programming, links this project to the broader New York City LGBTQIA community.

Depicting cheerful, romantic expressions of love as well as non-traditional nuclear families, the LGBTQIA artists highlight the bonds between themselves as art creators, and their bonds to those with whom they have personal ties.
