Exploring the beauty and inspiration of New York City’s pocket parks! These urban oases are a joyous part of our city, providing moments of relief and connection with nature amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. Their beauty and tranquility inspire us while serving as vibrant social hubs, bringing people together. They remind us of the importance of community and the serene joy that nature adds to our lives.

By nightfall, the building’s gestalt transforms yet again as it fades from a solid industrial mass to an ethereal, enigmatic glowing mural, a true work of art on a true urban scale.

The building skin is composed of a computer-generated pattern of concentric openings of increasing size that we then “erased” with freehand pen strokes, resulting in a random perforation that marries the hand and machine through craft. The skin is secured with visible exposed fasteners and backlit with LEDs in a reflective aluminum cavity.

With characteristic sensitivity to the qualities of building materials, we were drawn to how the composition of alloying copper, chromium, and nickel that comprise Corten steel oxidizes into a richly textured protective rust-like skin that is elegantly transformed by the setting sun into Rothko-like regions of color.

Exposing the wheels and motorized pulley mechanisms that raise and lower the panels against massive, bolted steel beams references the gritty industrial architecture of the chemical factories, coal yards, breweries, and rail yards of Bushwick’s historical past.

Using a bifold door panel system adapted from airplane hangars and factories, the façade’s motorized panels function as awnings in their raised position and lower to secure the shops behind a monolithic wall of weathered steel plate.

Unifying two abandoned warehouses with a single façade of Corten steel, this 10,000-square-foot adaptive reuse creates a landmark retail destination that signals Bushwick’s arrival as a new creative urban center, while recalling its industrial past.

When your client of 20 years is mesmerized by the international space station and iconic sci-fi movies — like 2001, Dune, Star Trek and Passengers — and asks to redesign their downtown loft ! Images 2, 3 and 4 are the inspiration.

Our client asked us to bring new energy to the gut renovation of storied 1920s Jazz Age estate on Southampton’s iconic Meadow Lane. As we thought about it, we realized how fun it would be to imagine a design where if Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Andy Warhol, and Edie Beale were all alive today, they would feel right at home. So in what was once an unremarkable, leftover playroom off the massive industrial kitchen, we edited the architecture to reveal the incredible proportion of this space and then opened it with walls of glass to a boundless ocean horizon. While the material and finish palette defers to this view, the eclectic combination of sculptural contemporary furnishings and blue chip art quietly work in harmony with saturated pops of color in a way that both casually relaxed and also timelessly impeccable.

For thousands of years, the desert sky inspires us with beauty to take note of what’s really important. With brilliance, robust constellations give us peace and offer tools to navigate, tell time, and even grow food. Thank you Orion and Pleiades for your sharing your wisdom last night, offering a way to think about living in harmony with nature and building our world more sustainably in a complex and fragile environment.

Celebrating the serene beauty and taming the raw power of an inhospitable desert landscape — where temperatures soar above 130 degrees by day and plunge to freezing at night — the pool at the Habitas AlUla is a contemporary oasis that flawlessly combines sustainable architectural practices and an ancient place with breathtaking simplicity. Let’s build more this way!

Who doesn’t love a grand entrance? The dramatic minimalism of this tropical residence combines clean lines with a sophisticated material palette and lush vegetation to create a home of great intimacy and warmth, despite its generous scale.

The ancient Romans carried amulets of onyx into battle for good luck. In renaissance Europe wearing onyx was thought to bestow eloquence. Mies van der Rohe brought in slabs from the Atlas Mountains for the Villa Tugendhat. We just think it’s stunningly beautiful!
