I am horrified to alert you that I will be performing something “new” in a mere ten days. Everyone I know has claimed to be out of town or having a baby that weekend so I beg you… if you are in town and not in the middle of giving birth, please come. If you are about to give birth and are open to that being part of the show, I also welcome you.
MATERIAL
July 20 & 21
6:30 & 8:30 PM
Considering the word “material,” as both the physical substances that comprise an object and the experiences that become a performance, I will gather an array of items — from my clown closet, from the garbage, and from the audience — to generate scores and screeds towards a clown fever dream in which I attempt to be possessed, rather than possess, and to follow pleasure amidst the mess.
Show includes possible appearances by a hungry bunny and an unpleasant birthday clown, with
rant-songs and associative monologs in which our host tries to make sense of it all. My muse for this exploration is my cat in heat. Her name is Fancy and she is unashamed to scream all day long.
Another muse is the buried marshland right outside the window of the Whitney, forever seeping. Reminding us that everything is and has always been… deeply unstable.
It would be a delight to spend an evening with you in a gleaming air conditioned tower of art overlooking the glistening Hudson that will no doubt soon flood our fair city of sin. Tix in bio 🎩
with live music by the one and only freak who puts up with me: Shane Riley, scenic, props, and costume design by Andreea Mincic and creative producing by Hanna Novak. deep thanks to everyone who has talked to me about improvisation, spirits, objects, and embodiment, especially Nile Harris, Lisa Fagan, Magda San Millan, Iris McCloughan, Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, and Anh Vo. Do I enjoy this? You may wonder. Do I enjoy constantly posting close ups of my face to entice you my beloved friends to buy tickets to my shows? No no my friends no I do not. And that is why I generally attempt to hide behind a rubber chicken or an egg and cheese on a roll with salt pepper ketchup hot sauce no bacon please I’m jewish thank you!! A mask conceals… in order to reveal!!!

Yes my friends to mentally prepare myself for this post I had to run a hot bath and I even brewed a cup of hot soothing tea which I kept by the tub. And I soaked in my own filth for a long time which is what a bath is.
🍵
And I stayed in the tub so long that I drank all my tea and poured myself another cup and drank it too. But then I realized at no point had I gotten out of the tub to pour myself a second cup of tea so I must have simply dipped the mug in the bathwater and drank it entirely without thinking. I drank my own bathwater.
🛀
And at this realization I was so disgusted with myself that I wept and wept into the bath. And my hot tears somewhat raised the temperature of the bath which had by that point gone lukewarm which is the most dismal sort of bath. Trust me on this, I am a bath connoisseur.
💧
And I stayed in that semi-warm bath so long that I drank a third cup of tea. Except then I realized it wasn’t tea at all! It must be my own filthy bathwater mixed with tears! And then and only then did I sigh with the ecstasy of a rare artistic breakthrough. For that is precisely what I hope my show to feel like. Filthy bathwater mixed with tears. And sort of just… allowing oneself to soak in filthy bathwater mixed with tears. And trusting that what needs to happen will happen. Sometimes, just sometimes, you may even manage to write a whole caption.
💦
Thank you to my tireless collaborators who put up with me even though my process is mostly just weeping in the tub & to everyone who has supported this sad boy research 😭
