Juneteenth is a day that commemorates the end of slavery. On this day in 1865, the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, learned that they were free -- even though the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln more than two years before. "We have come far, and we have far to go,” said Vice President Kamala Harris in 2021 of this important holiday, “But today is a day of celebration." Juneteenth became a new federal holiday last year, and this carries great weight. We at Brooklyn Ballet want to affirm the meaning of this day. Here is a clip from Brooklyn Ballet’s recent performance, Unnatural Surrounding, featuring poet Jasmine Mans. Unnatural Surrounding was developed for the 1619 Project launch event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on November 15, 2021, in response to Mans’ poem “Greenwood.” The piece was created by a group of nine Brooklyn Ballet dancers as they connected, and shared, collaborating to find solace and resilience.
