Patti and her kids Darryl, Lux, and Poly narrowly escaped slaughter at a meat farm. Because someone cared about their survival as a family and reached out, they now live together as part of a big sheep community! So how has the Baa-nd been doing in Sanctuary? Simply incredible!

Even though she has low vision, Patti is still frequently a herd leader when it comes to free-roaming days. Darryl is a little socialite and frequently doing "his own thing". Lux is always a very busy lamb, and little Poly is starting to grow just a bit - and bobs and weaves her way through the herd every day.

Rescuing a whole family at once was a big undertaking but we're so glad we got to do it...thanks to supporters like you ❤ Watching the Baa-nd will never get old!

Friends, we really need your help!! 🚨 One of the water pipes that services our main pig barn burst suddenly and needed to be repaired right away.

Not only is the repair bill for all this work going to be substantial, but an emergency like this means we need to shift staff time and resources and work extra hard to make sure the animals are safe and well-cared-for. Can you help with some of the impact of this emergency? You can get these funds to us right away via Venmo @ Woodstock-Sanctuary or on our website.

17 of our rescued pigs, like Marsha and Agnes, rely on that water and its supply is used for a variety of things like hydration, keeping cool in wallows, and the caregiving team cleaning their food bowls and other supplies. This couldn’t wait—and we have a REALLY tight budget...so anything that comes up unexpected is a challenge. We rely on our community during emergencies like this. Anything helps—Venmo or via our website. Thanks everyone❤️

NEW RESCUE ALERT: Hervé and Sean drove seven hours last night to rescue a little two-year-old cow — she’s beautiful and we already love her so much. Her name is Juniper Red and she has spent her whole life on a dairy farm, but was spared from being used as a milking cow by one of the family members who really loves her. Juniper Red needed a safe, forever home and we are so happy we could say yes to this rescue. So much gratitude to Leanne of Goats of Anarchy for making this happen (please follow them if you haven’t already).

Without somewhere safe to go Juniper Red most likely was going to become a dairy cow — a short life of being pumped for her milk and having babies taken from her — a life her person desperately wanted to save her from. She is now safe at the animal hospital getting a full check-up. We are hoping for a clean bill of health for this sweet girl so we can bring Juniper Red home for the holidays.

We will update when we know more, but right now anything you can give towards her care is so needed. It’s the end of a very hard year and we knew we could say yes to this little cow because we knew supporters like you would help us. Every gift to Juniper Red will be doubled thanks to a generous friend of Woodstock Sanctuary who is matching all gifts from now until the last day of the year. That means your gift for this sweet little cow makes twice the impact

The dairy industry is a major contributor to climate change and environmental destruction, with one liter of cow’s milk requiring more than 22 times more water and roughly 12 times more land, and emitting three times more CO2 emissions than one liter of soy milk. (1)

This eco-impact chart doesn't even factor in methane emissions, which matter— a lot— because methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2; it traps significantly more heat. Over a 100 year time frame, methane is 20-25 times stronger than CO2, and over a 20-year time-frame, it is 72-84 times stronger. (2)

A recent study from the Joint Global Change Research Institute found that methane emissions from farmed animals are 11 percent higher than previously calculated. The researchers state that the concentration of methane in the atmosphere increased 10 times more quickly in the last decade than in the decade prior. “This change is due to a number of factors including an 8.4 percent increase in methane emissions from the dairy industry."

The researchers also note a 37% increase in emissions due to changes in manure management, including the use of anaerobic manure lagoons. Manure from cattle releases substantial quantities of methane into the atmosphere, such that the EPA classifies “manure management” as a separate category of methane emissions. (3)

Another nasty by-product of cow manure is nitrous oxide, a climate-warming pollutant 298 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. (4)

The dirtiest dairy offender is cheese: it takes 10 lbs. of milk to produce just one lb. of cheese, making cheese the third worst food for climate after beef and lamb. (5)

If you care about the planet, turn over a new leaf and choose plant-based milks, cheeses, yogurts, and more. Adopting a plant-based diet is one of the single most important actions you can take to help the climate and environment, and of course the animals.
