In NYC, we get to work on old stuff. There’s nothing about the new stuff that performs better than a simple old steam-to-water heat exchanger. Municipal steam costs a lot to buy but it saves a lot of money by not having to own and operate the equipment to make your own steam. Still, Con Ed’s steam is scary. It comes into the buildings at around 160 PSI and 350°. There are many stories about service techs having their fingers blown off and worse for not having followed safety protocols. Taking the time to do things right and with a specific process makes all the difference.

Cooking Grease Down a Drain Eyed in Sewage Flood of 300 Homes, Officials Say A blocked pipe caused sewage to back up several feet deep in homes in a Queens neighborhood as officials looked at a familiar culprit on the heels of Thanksgiving.

Here are a couple of showing the path of travel of steam through an improperly vented 2-pipe and a properly trapped radiator. With the vent in the wrong place, only half the radiator receives steam. This heating pattern is what we look for when a client complains about inadequate room heating. Running a hand along the top of the radiator gives the misleading impression that the unit is working well when half its potential is not being utilized.
