ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Zella Vanié .vanie

“Zella Vanié (b.1988) is a multidisciplinary artist who splits their time between Brooklyn and Côte d’Ivoire. While they’ve been exploring their imagination and inner-verse since childhood, Vanié’s art practice flourished in recent years after a series of events that spurred upheaval in their spiritual, emotional, and existential states. Image making became their way to map provocations of meaning and liberation in their life.

From large-scale pop art figurative portraiture to narrative-driven “images of protest,” Vanié visualizes concepts that bridge the core parts of their diasporic identity, a Black q***r veteran who grew up in the Midwest, to the stories and experiences of communities in Bedstuy and Côte d’Ivoire, their late father’s home country.

In their first year of showing work, Vanié has shown with a global network of art fairs, contemporary art galleries New York and in New Jersey, and in various activations in New York City.

Vanié earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts; and has taught design courses at New York University and California College of the Arts.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Yanqing Pei

“Yanqing Pei works with the idea that everything exists as one simultaneously while being connected to something else independently in her paintings. Her practice is an exploration of the intimate symbiotic relationship between human beings and their surroundings with the focus on nature, as well as imaginations of poetic spaces derived from narrative contexts composed of Chinese ideographic characters. Pei graduated with her BFA and MFA in Chinese Painting in 2014 and 2017, from China Academy of Art, and her MFA in Painting and Drawing in 2021, from Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited in Hangzhou, Nanjing, Dunkirk and New York. She is currently working and living in New York.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Sophie Steck

“Sophie Steck is a Brooklyn-based, multidisciplinary artist. She is drawn to textural materials which she uses to play with form and create spaces that are interwoven with narrative through symbols and motifs that recur in her personal visual language.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence Ryan Zogheb

“Ryan Zogheb was born and raised in New York, his work has been featured in three gallery exhibitions, and he recently graduated from NYU in May of 2022 earning his bachelor’s of fine arts. His paintings primarily focus on symbols of beauty as a means to either dispel beauty standards or bring viewers, and himself, into an eerie space of self-reflection. While creating his artworks he attempts to reach an absolute perfection when replicating either the image in front of him, or the experience with the subject of the painting. When finding that perfection cannot be reached, Ryan refutes the image and embraces the unconscious of the painting process allowing his works to enter deeper states of abstraction.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Jenny Jiyoung Han

“Jenny used to take an enormous interest in talking about abstract emotions, turning them into creative works of art concerning a humanitarian perspective. She wondered how people create the world within their original functionings in social organizations or domains were her ultimate question.

Extending the purview of creativity beyond nature and culture to include the processes and shaping the material universe allows us to envision the creative mentality itself for a generative multiplicity. Developing a unique Identity as originality is a challenge, and not many would have come a whole circle to say the above. But, she has been building throughout her experience and level of investment in time and travel. She hopes to share the beautiful path of life story with some understanding people who can embrace creative goals and norms that enhance their enjoyment of life. She believes there is always a strong possibility of getting recognized with a chain of successful life stories within understanding better the humanistic side of values.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Indigo Child

“I am an abstract visual artist. I originally studied Fashion Design at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA and the Fashion Institute of Technology, in NYC. However, in 2020, during the pandemic, I slowly drifted into drawing, painting and mixed media and became immersed in creating sculpture. In the last 3 years, I have made over 200 paintings, drawings, sculptures and video art. I have transitioned my studio in Gowanus Brooklyn (NYC), into a fully immersive multimedia exhibit space, using my work to fill each wall, ceiling and floor with my art. The space is entitled Indigo World. Indigo World has been open for public view since May, 2022.

In addition, my work has been featured in the Inaugural Group Exhibition at Soft Times Gallery in San Francisco this past April, 2022. I was also a featured artist in their first Quarterly Publication. This past spring I was the artist-in residence at Better Arts in Redwood, NY (Upstate). This residency culminated in a show of my work which included the debut of my prop money canvas paintings. Also, this past spring I participated in Curators of Culture’s Art Fashion Runway Show in Manhattan. This show featured multiple designers, and included many of my pieces of fashion art. This summer, I have my “pill purse” piece at the Art Apple NYC gallery in Brooklyn, NYC. I look forward to my second year participating in the Gowanus Brooklyn Open Studio Tour this coming Fall, 2022.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Eric Bohrer .online

“Eric Bohrer works within a newer-objectivity, a contrived and self-aware critical philosophy that is drawn to the labor, time, and material necessary for the performance of the specific cultural ritual of producing art. He seeks to observe process as its own image and subject. From his observations he adds to an ever-growing library of exaggerated figures and abstract forms through a variety of visual techniques, including stone carving, metalworking, and silk screen printing to name just a few. Each form is a direct product of its respective making process, through which he is able to connect himself and the viewer within a moment in and out of time. Bohrer graduated in 2017 with a BA of Art History from Reed College, and earned an MFA of Studio Art at Rochester Institute of Technology in 2022. He currently lives and works as a fabricator in Brooklyn, New York.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Danny Starr

“Danny Starr is a self-taught artist based in Brooklyn, NY. He first discovered his love for painting while gaining his graphic design degree from Fort Lewis College. Since then, he has studied in courses including the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy and more recently with the Uncool artists program. He utilizes his knowledge in these various forms of art to create unique and inspiring pieces across all mediums. In 2015, he designed the campaign poster for I-301 to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms in Denver. He shows works and paints murals across the country and was a finalist at the 2019 ARC Salon.

While a figure painter, his drive as an artist has always been aimed internally, exploring ideas on the nature of reality, human condition, life and death, and self-care. The subjects in his work are emerged in a surreal dreamscape created out of the relationships between his varying techniques.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, A. E. Thompson

“From her grandfather’s tall tales to the classical literature from different cultures and times, storytelling has been a passion of A.E. Thompson from her youth. Her love of listening to life stories and great appetite for reading has led to the growth of colorful and ever-expanding imagination. This has shaped the foundation and expression of her art. Her work mainly focuses on the portrait with the addition of headwear that she creates.

A.E. Thompson was born in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1985. Thompson received her Master of Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art, studying classical painting. She has shown her work in New York City, NY, and other locations around the U.S and has received awards at various shows and at the Salmagundi Club including the Kennelly Family Scholarship award. She also helped curate the show “Ivory Alive” with Six Summit Gallery, in which her work was also showcased. Thompson currently resides and works in New York City.

Please join us next Wednesday, August 24, from 7-9pm for the opening reception of HERE RESIDES FANTASY — a group exhibition of select works from our current Artists in Residence.

Exhibition conceptualized and curated by Daniel Kuzinez and Patrice Scott

“The Swiss Psychoanalyst Carl Jung differentiated between passive and active fantasies. Passive fantasies are the spontaneous manifestations of the unconscious, while active fantasies, characteristic of the creative mind, are born out intuition directed towards understanding the unconscious. The former require criticism and the latter understanding. As one’s subconscious landscape is determined by individual experiences it is ultimately subjective. In turn, one’s manifestations of fantasy are unique from all others’. During the last six weeks, eight artists of different backgrounds, working in different styles and mediums created works for this show. Each artist’s work is the engendering of their subconsciousness, as they bring their distinct, active fantasies into the world.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Julianna McCarthy

“Julianna McCarthy is a multidisciplinary artist with a penchant for the strange and surreal. In 2015 she began publicly sharing the mixed media collages she had been creating since childhood, using the alias Surreal Deep Cuts. Her collages explore the intersection of madness, q***rness, and otherness through a surreal lens, with a particular focus on the be***al aspects of human nature. Before landing in New York, Julianna was based in Newfoundland and Toronto, where she also worked as an actor, singer, and writer.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Anna Romanofsky

“Anna Romanofsky — My maternal lineage, my unborn children and I, in a facetious manner, may have been suitable for fables starring egregious and brooding protagonists.

Hysteria in mythical context is often communicated via the damned and beguiling, which are emblematic of collective social anxieties surrounding  “female” somatic function. Anna investigates how tropes of hysteria and themes of gestation manifest in eastern European folklore and contemporary body horror, while often inserting herself into these narrative compounds.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Alex Yu

“Alex Yu, Visual Artist graduated in 2019 with a BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts from the University of Washington Seattle. AAS degree at Seattle Central College in Apparel Design and Development with emphasis on Technical Design and Manufacturing. Artworks include the following formats: Installation, Illustration, Digital, Photography, Cyanotype, Screen-printing, Monotype, Natural Dyeing, Weaving, Felting, Sewing, Knitting, and Wire Sculpture.

My interests lie heavily in art that implements concepts of design. I’m more interested in why decisions in art and culture are made, rather than just what they are. Some favorite artists include: James Jean, Pina Bausch, and Andrzej Zulawski. The German expressionist and European New Wave movements are especially influential to my works as well.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Current Artist in Residence, Abbey Gilbert

“Abbey Gilbert is a New York City based artist working with photography, printmaking and poetry. She recently received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Video from the School of Visual Arts. The focal point of Gilbert’s work is her exploration of le***an sexual chemistry and the ambiguous space between comfort and eroticism. In June, she curated her first group show, that she also exhibited in, at HERE Arts Center. Gilbert has also recently exhibited in the Untitled: Art Miami Beach Fair and online exhibitions with SVA BFA Photography and Susan Eley Fine Art Gallery.”
