It is with great sadness that Ridgewood Savings Bank (the “Bank”) announces the passing of our dear friend William (“Bill”) C. McGarry, The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bank from 2004 to 2011. Mr. McGarry began his career at the Bank in 1987 as Vice President and Comptroller, and subsequently served as the Bank’s Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and President prior to being elected President and CEO by the Board of Trustees in 2004. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2005 until his retirement in 2011.

An avid golfer, car enthusiast and philanthropist, Bill personified our corporate culture of “Multiplying the Good”. During his tenure as CEO, he was actively involved in numerous charities, and served on the Board of St. Joseph’s University, New York, and MercyFirst.

Ridgewood Savings Bank remembers William C. McGarry and is grateful for his dedicated service and leadership, and offers our deepest condolences to his surviving family members.

This past April, during his purpose-driven journey to Cape Town, South Africa, Patrick Wong focused on making a positive impact through , emphasizing responsible travel and support for local communities. Funded entirely from a collection taken amongst family, friends, Ridgewood colleagues, and himself, Patrick's mission aimed to provide school supplies for approximately 60 children ages 7 to 18.
Ahead of traveling to Cape Town, Patrick coordinated with staff personnel at The Homestead, a local organization providing support and care for vulnerable and neglected children, helping them overcome trauma and build better futures. They identified a need for school supplies for the upcoming school year. Consequently, Patrick organized a collection drive, bringing together contributions of money and school supplies. On April 17, Patrick participated in a day filled with impactful activities. The agenda, prepared by The Homestead, included visits to several key locations; The Bridge Child & Youth Care Centre (CYCC) in Khayelitsha, Homestead Site C Early Intervention Centre in Khayelitsha, and Yizani Drop-in Centre in Woodstock all located in Cape Town, South Africa.
At the core of Patrick's work is the commitment to engage in responsible and sustainable travel by giving back to the communities impacted by his travels. Patrick plans to continue collaborating with The Homestead to ensure ongoing support for the children. For this month’s , we visited Abracadabra Magic Diner at 566 Onderdonk Avenue in Ridgewood, Queens. In 2012, food artist Dilara Bugdayci left behind her internationally renowned restaurant in Istanbul to start over in New York. Since then, she has made it her mission to bring her warm hospitality and dishes inspired by her global travels to the people of Ridgewood. Traveling worldwide has given Dilara a unique insight into the different spices and flavors used in varying cuisines to help inspire the delicious farm-to-table dishes she serves, paying homage to her Turkish roots and other Middle Eastern and Mediterranean staples.

A strong sense of community drives her, evident all over Abracadabra, including the walls decorated by local artists Joro-Boro, Keena Maya, and Samuelll Sutcliffe, along with the live music and open mic nights on the weekends. The space is warm and inviting, and the food is delicious, like their Lentil Quinoa Bowl based on a traditional Turkish dish. For this month’s , we visited Chef Gigi’s Place at 970 Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square. Partners Pierluigi Sacchetti, “Chef Gigi,” and Michael Russo have become a neighborhood staple. With their wood-burning stove and imported ingredients, they are making some of the best pizza on Long Island, having been featured as one of Newsday’s Top 10 Pizzas on Long Island four years in a row.
