Breakfast at the Marriott Mena House Cairo is not to be missed! Clockwise from 6:00 am: a spoonful of baba ghanouge, fresh fattush salad, beetroot salad, feteer (a layered cheese pie of wheat and vermicelli pastry) with a drizzle of molasses and tahini as the chef suggested, Egyptian brown bread, a dollop of metable (a sesame eggplant salad) plus a scoop of labneh yoghurt in the middle.

Egyptian food may appear to have many cousins in Turkey, Greece and Iran but the cuisine encompasses more complex spices, aromatic herbs, sauces and a hand-crafted touch you rarely find in those countries. All healthy and delicious.

And the cost? This 5* hotel charges US$22 including all taxes and tips for its 24-hour, nonstop wonderful buffets. Outside restaurants cost us about US$6 each for dinner and a glass of Egyptian Rose. Come to Egypt, if only to dine well!!

9-year-old Mohammed picked up some English at school and his insta-worthy photo and social media skills online. He works part time for his dad, Mohammed, who owns 20 camels at the pyramids of Giza. After we paid our $15 for a 20-minute ride on Mickey Mouse (L) and Michael Jackson(R), it was obvious why even the camels want to kiss him! Thanks for our trip.

Pros: The hotel is super convenient and has large guest rooms. The sumptuous breakfast buffet ranges from sushi to belila to quiche and granola. The pool deck has an outdoor playground and kids trampoline zone. The 30th floor rooftop bar has a view over the hip neighborhood of Zamalek. We are 5 minutes by Uber from the legendary Cairo Museum.
