Leading up to this chaotic week in Washington DC, Ameinu leadership was involved in intense deliberations with organizational colleagues around what to say and what actions to take. There were American Jewish leaders counseling progressive Zionists to stay home so as not to get “lumped in with other protesters.” We, however, knew it was our role to support our Israeli allies and the hostage families to speak out against Prime Minister’s Netanyahu’s cynical, politically motivated trip to Washington. In fact, Ameinu recently hosted the newly elected chair of the Israel Labor Party Yair Golan for a Zoom event, and when asked what is the role of Diaspora Jews regarding Netanyahu, he described the “failure” of the Israeli government and called on us to “struggle together to save Israeli democracy.”

To (un)welcome Netanyahu during his visit to Washington next week and in solidarity with the Israeli protest movement, we encourage you to download this image and use it as your profile picture (you can access it here, too- https://peacenow.org/entry.php?id=43330).
The Hebrew translates to “you are the head (or leader), you are to blame.” This message has become the calling card of the protest movement and has been plastered on billboards across Tel Aviv and around Israel for months. We are using it now to demand that Netanyahu end the war in Gaza and bring the hostages home. Please keep that image as your profile picture through July 24th, when Netanyahu is scheduled to address Congress.

March 20, 2024 – We are deeply disturbed by the condemnatory statement issued yesterday by the Conference of Presidents (COP) following a meeting with Majority Leader Schumer. Though the critical COP statement was made in the name of the CEO and President, it claims to speak for COP “membership” when in fact it clearly fails to reflect the diversity of views within the COP.

Ameinu views with grave concern the recent statements by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu which seemingly reject the possibility of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The Prime Minister has claimed, "My insistence is what has prevented — over the years — the establishment of a Palestinian state that would have constituted an existential danger to Israel. As long as I am prime minister, I will continue to strongly insist on this.” Mr. Prime Minister, your policies have failed; the weakening of the Palestinian Authority and your backroom support for Hamas made Israelis less safe and harmed Israel’s security.

Ameinu welcomes the announcement by the government of Israel of a ceasefire in its war with Hamas in order to expedite the return of 50 Israelis who have been kidnapped and held in the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire agreement is an important first step towards the return of all of those taken from Israel by Hamas on October 7th but does not, in itself, address the critical questions that remain regarding a military and diplomatic path forward that ensures peace and security for all in Israel and Palestine.

As we begin the seventh week of warfare, we are asking tough questions about Israel's response to the horrific Hamas attack on October 7th, the threat that Hamas will remain a political and military force and the civilian death toll in Gaza. As you think about these issues, we highly recommend that you read Dan Fleshler's new post on The Third Narrative website entitled My Heart Struggles With My Head. We would love to have your thoughts and comments on this article.
Please share with others who will find it useful.
My Heart Struggles with My Head - The Third Narrative My heart tells me the Israeli bombing attacks should stop. But my head tells me a ceasefire would enable Hamas leaders to remain in power .... [and] would do nothing to eliminate the threat Hamas poses to Israel in general or allow the residents of ... southern Israel to return home.

Following is a statement by members of the Progressive Israel Network (PIN), a coalition of organizations representing Americans who are committed to pursuing democracy, equality and peace in Israel.
As we grasp the dimensions of the horror in southern Israel, the magnitude of the carnage, injury and destruction, we mourn the lives lost and wish a speedy and full recovery for those injured. We also urge the government of Israel, the Biden administration and all other stakeholders to immediately start negotiations over returning the hostages taken by Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Their savage attack on Israel, beginning on Saturday, targeting civilians and murdering them in cold blood, is an inexcusable war crime.
We stand with the people of Israel in this very difficult time. Our hearts are with the Israeli public. We urge our members and supporters to assist our sisters and brothers in Israel in every way possible.
