It’s not about finding a different residential center or new hospital team.
It’s about taking a step back and really understanding what’s actually happening.
Only then can you find an effective treatment option.
(Hint: the most effective treatment option may not involve a hospital stay at all!)
Because your ED is not sticking around for no reason.
It’s here because it’s serving a purpose. The sooner you can understand that—the sooner you can start to recover long-term.
We know it can feel like your eating disorder is helping your career.
You feel sharper; more in control.
Unfortunately, that’s just a mirage—a short-term surge that is not reflective of the real impact of an eating disorder on your mind and body.
Don’t let the disorder fool you. It’s not the key to your career growth. In fact, it’s likely what’s holding you back. If not now, soon.
As says: diet culture is a life thief.
Don’t let it steal your life for one more minute.

Read that last part again.
You should be talking about the end of treatment at the beginning. If you’re not, it’s time to find a treatment team who can help you see the finish line—not just a never-ending road.
Another hospitalization isn’t always the answer. (In fact, it rarely is.)
It can feel beyond exhausting to be experiencing this type of eating disorder or even caring for someone struggling with this type of eating disorder.
Stick around this month to learn more about how to make treatment more effective—and why you, or the person you love, doesn’t need to suffer forever.

The benefits of recovery at home.
Your child can attend school (as long as meals are supervised), socialize (meals at home first), and engage in meaningful activities (around mealtimes).
Being at home is key to helping your child recover long-term and feel safe, loved, and supported throughout the process.
This is why we’re huge proponents of Family-Based Treatment here at Columbus Park.

Keep going, friend.
If you’re still in the small space that the eating disorder has carved out for you, we hope you ask for help.
Recovery is worth it, even if it’s impossible to imagine your life without the eating disorder right now.
This frequent co-occurrence of trauma and eating disorders is not coincidental but rather deeply intertwined.
Your recovery team needs to understand why and how these two phenomena often intersect—and how they have uniquely intersected for you—to create an effective and safe treatment plan.
Yes, therapy and uncovering the root cause for an eating disorder is important, but…
Food must come first.
This is especially true with anorexia. The “medicine” for anorexia is food. At least at the start. Once there is some physical stability, the brain is more receptive to psychotherapy to get to factors that made the individual vulnerable to developing the eating disorder in the first place.

One of the most effective and efficient treatments for eating disorders in kids and teens often goes under the radar: Family-Based Treatment or “FBT.”
Talk about efficiency… FBT involves just one parent/child session per week. The streamlined intervention requires a team of a medical doctor and the FBT therapist - that’s it, even for the most serious ED cases. This once weekly hour alongside regular medical monitoring with the pediatrician is typically enough to successfully “create a hospital at home.”
As a bonus, FBT reduces dependence on programs and providers. Instead, parents are given the knowledge and tools to take over and trust in themselves that their love and commitment to their child makes them the ideal guides for their child’s recovery.
While FBT is challenging for the child and parents alike, there is typically great appreciation for the ability to recover at home as opposed to in a hospital or residential treatment center.
Parents, we know you can help your child recover—and we can give you the tools to do it.

Don’t believe your eating disorder.
It’s really, really good at lying.
You are loved. You are appreciated. You are needed.
Don’t let the ED make you believe any different.
Kids and teens are resilient—we can use that to our advantage in recovery.
Early intervention helps us take care of the eating disorder before it becomes so ingrained in their life, it becomes a part of who they are as they’re growing into adults.

Set expectations—and be prepared to shift them again and again.
Your progress isn’t linear, or like anyone else’s.
Embrace the journey and lean on your support when it feels impossible to keep trusting.
Ozempic will MASK your problems.
Don’t let their very expensive and effective marketing fool you, friend.
We know, this is hard—for so many reasons.
And it’s hard because you love your child so much, which is what actually makes you the best person to support your kiddo through recovery.
Give yourself grace through this process as much as you do your child.
Let go of what social media is telling you and focus on YOUR journey and needs.
Some people are better off distracting while eating to reduce anxiety. That’s okay.
Everyone’s recovery journey looks different. There’s no one size fits all and sometimes the most helpful approach to a struggle may surprise you!
Parenting didn’t come with a manual about how to manage an eating disorder in your child! Here is an “appetizer” of information to give you some direction.
The approach is different depending on the eating disorder but one thing is the same throughout:
An empowered parent is the difference between recovery and a long-term condition.
With the support of eating disorder professionals, like us at Columbus Park, you can absolutely guide your child through recovery.
A helpful activity for anorexia recovery is to reflect on your values and aspirations beyond the eating disorder.
What do you really want from your life?
Who do you want to be?
What kind of impact do you want to have?
In the end, how do you want to be remembered?
Rarely do people want to be remembered first for being thin and for controlling their food intake.
There’s so much more to you… and for you…
We recently saw a post from .andie on real responses from real people on Ozempic for weight loss.
Instead—let go of diet culture.
Instead—ask for help.
Instead—recover.
Two reminders for parents:
1. As someone who loves your child more than anything in this world, you’re in a unique and powerful position to help them! You should NOT be left out of your child/teen’s recovery process.
2. There are proven methods, like Family-Based Treamtent, that prioritize empowering parents and using them as the most important resource for their child’s recovery.
Stay tuned this month to learn more about your potential impact as a parent when your child is in recovery.
If you’re willing to see and accept this, however, recovery is possible.
Your eating disorder doesn’t have to be a life sentence 💚

Navigating this dual desire to stay thin while also wanting to get well requires a compassionate and individualized approach in treatment.
Therapists work collaboratively with individuals to explore and validate their conflicting emotions and motivations, helping them untangle the complex web of thoughts and feelings that underlie their eating disorder.
This may involve addressing core psychological challenges, such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, or trauma, that contribute to the fear of weight gain and the need for control.
The therapeutic space remains a place where individuals feel heard and understood, free from judgment or pressure to change.

Before intuitive eating comes planning and structure.
Before you can trust your hunger and fullness cues, you need to heal the parts of you that are getting in the way of that intuitive sense.
We like to say that you need to build the scaffolding first—then you can let yourself be intuitively guided.
We love evidence-based outpatient treatment because it’s best serves our clients.
They can continue living their life, taking care of their family, or going to school or work while also healing from their eating disorder.
Most importantly—they have the support of loved ones, one of the most underrated tools for eating disorder recovery.
You or your child CAN very likely recovery at home, don’t let anyone else tell you different.
We see you, parents!
If your child is struggling with an eating disorder, please remember that outpatient treatment is likely a viable option. If they are medically stable, and you or another caregiver is willing to play a primary role—your child can stay home and recover.

When someone is deep in the grips of anorexia, there are moments when it feels like they're winning at something…
Even if that "something" is incredibly harmful.
There's a sense of accomplishment and control that comes with seeing the numbers on the scale drop or feeling clothes loosen. Always chasing the victory in this personal competition.
The problem is, these moments of victory are fleeting—but the long-term health complications are not.

You might THINK it’s fixing these things—because it’s soothing your disordered eating and relationship to your body.
But if you want that soothing to last forever, you have to continue taking the drug forever.
Literally, forever. Studies show that the weight quickly comes back and in many cases, people are gaining more weight than when they started.
So, what’s our Ozempic motto?
Just don’t do it, friends.
