The buzz this week is around the collapse of Smile Direct Club, a direct to consumer healthcare tool. The failure of this system was primarily due to inadequate orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, and supervision over patient’s care. “Patients” became “consumers”.

While aligners can do almost anything braces can do, sometimes even more efficiently, the level of understanding of the software and orthodontics makes all the difference in treatment outcome. It’s important to choose an experienced provider. We are happy to consult with SDC customers to transition them to Invisalign.

Retainer checks are an important part of orthodontic care. Teeth are typically moved in childhood and adolescence to help maximize the growth and development of the jaws in the face. Once braces or aligners are completed, retainers are given to maintain the correction of the teeth as you complete the full growth of the jaws and face. This growth can continue on average until 17-23 years old based on gender and genetics. Most adolescent patients are busy in high school and college at this time, and it’s not easy to remember to include retainer wear in your nighttime routine. Also, the most diligent patient can experience changes from a late mandibular growth spurt.

As a result, teeth can shift slightly, particularly in the lower front teeth. Maintaining your retainer appointments allows us to catch tooth relapse early and get ahead of it by either adjusting your retainers, or with a less lengthy retreatment with aligners for a few months.

Our faces continue to gradually change throughout life as a part of the aging process but at a much slower pace. We recommend retainers to be checked annually, be periodically replaced, and worn while sleeping always!
