"The first proclamation declaring May 5 MMIP (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons) Day was issued in 2017. The date of May 5 was selected after the Montana congressional delegation persuaded the U.S. Senate to pass a resolution declaring the national day of awareness to honor the birthday of Hanna Harris, a 21-year-old member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe who went missing on July 4, 2013," reports Native News Online.
"In 2019, quilt squares spelling out the words “YOU ARE NOT ALONE” blanketed the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It was the first national memorial created for and by survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence. Such violence is prevalent through many communities, yet certain populations experience it far more often than others. Studies have shown that four out of five American Indian and Alaska Native women have suffered such violence, and thousands of Indigenous people in the United States and Canada are murdered or are declared missing each year," writes artist Ashley Minner (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina) in our (https://s.si.edu/4bj0Ek4).
The creation and display of the Monument Quilt on the National Mall was organized by FORCE: Upsetting R**e Culture, an artist and activist collective co-founded by Rebecca Nagle, Cherokee writer and advocate, and Hannah Brancato. FORCE organized workshops to create quilt squares and in-progress displays on American Indian reservations and other outdoor spaces 49 times across the United States and Mexico.
The National Museum of the American Indian, through the generous support of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, acquired 10 quilt squares and 5 shawls from the Monument Quilt in 2022.
We spoke with Minner, Brancato, and FORCE studio director Shanti Flagg, behind-the-scenes at our Cultural Resources Center during the archiving of the quilt squares in 2023 (see our Instagram post: https://s.si.edu/3Ur9HJ5). Minner said "I thought it was very important and timely [for the museum] to invest in these pieces [...] these belong here. They were made in support of tribal sovereignty, challenges to which are directly related to the epidemic of violence against Native women and children that is now being brought to light, perhaps most effectively by artists."

New artist exhibit in the Williams & Fayad Galleries! Come check it out during regular gallery hours (Thurs: 5-8; Fri & Sat: 10-2) or at her reception May 18th, 3-5pm!
Raised in Newark, NY, Dawn Miranda has been an artist since middle school. She attended Syracuse University and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Art, then worked as a graphic designer for several Fortune 500 companies. Now retired, Dawn has begun to more actively pursue her love of painting watercolors, oils and pastel. Light and shadow play a big role in her paintings, but the most important aspect for Dawn is to create a sense of tranquility, bringing the viewer to a peaceful and enjoyable place where they would feel a sense of serenity and relaxation.
What an awesome turnout for the Wayne County Middle School Show Opening! If you missed out you can still see the show until the first week in May! Thank you to all of the teachers, parents, students, family members and administrators that came out to show your support for the arts! Thanks also to my fellow board members Jason and Steven for all of their help too!
