In 1990, the U.S. began to recognize November as Native American and Indigenous Heritage Month. This time is an opportunity for all Americans to reflect on the achievements made by our continent’s first peoples: Native Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hawaiian Natives.

Here are just a few who have left a significant mark on healthcare:
• Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte was the first Native American woman in the U.S. to receive a medical degree.
• Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail was the first Crow person to become a registered nurse. In 1962, she was awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Nursing by President John F. Kennedy.
• Dr. Annie Dodge Wauneka authored an English-Navajo medical dictionary to help providers communicate better with patients.
• Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord became the first Navajo woman board-certified surgeon.

There are many more to recognize. The common thread is that all of them saw a need in their community and stepped up to serve. May we all do the same.

Through education and awareness, we seek to ensure that healthcare supports all communities.
