Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States.

Wishing all who celebrate - a very happy and healthy Kwanzaa!

December 26 - January 1: Each day of Kwanzaa is devoted to celebrating the seven basic values of African culture or the “Nguzo Saba,” which in Swahili means the seven principles 12. The seven principles are:

Umoja (Unity): Emphasizes unity within families, communities, and the African diaspora.
Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Encourages individuals to shape their own destiny.
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Encourages working together to solve problems.
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Encourages supporting and building up businesses in the community.
Nia (Purpose): Encourages setting goals and working towards them.
Kuumba (Creativity): Encourages using creativity to build and maintain a strong community.
Imani (Faith): Encourages belief in oneself, others, and the community.
The final day of Kwanzaa culminates in a feast (called Karamu) on New Year’s Day 1. The holiday emphasizes the harvest season with symbols of health, community, and prosperity 1.

The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity has honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for the past 53 years with an annual memorial breakfast. In fact, the YMCA was the first local organization to hold an event honoring Dr. King. This breakfast allows us to take time from our busy schedule to remember and reflect on Dr. King’s vision of a community and world of peace, love, and understanding.

Please join us as we gather for this 53rd Memorial Breakfast. This is a wonderful opportunity to recommit ourselves to the high ideals which Dr. King personified.
