Getting to know the new cadet commander for the Orange County Cadet Squadron, C/CMSgt Martin Saenz.

QUESTION: Why did you join Civil Air Patrol?

C/CMSgt Saenz: The idea of wearing a uniform and belonging to a goal-oriented organization excited me. I also wanted to meet people my age with similar interests. I joined on January 15, 2019 and have enjoyed my experiences and growth as a leader

QUESTION: What is your favorite memory from your time in CAP?

C/CMSgt Saenz: When our squadron commander announced in front of the whole squadron that I scored 100% on my Wright Brothers exam. I am proud of that achievement.

QUESTION: What roles have you held at the squadron?

C/CMSgt Saenz: I am honored to have progressed from element leader, flight sergeant, first sergeant and now to cadet commander. I also served as cadre for our squadron’s Great Start program.

QUESTION: What is your vision for the squadron as cadet commander?

C/CMSgt Saenz: My vision is to resume meeting at Stewart AFB and recruit at least two full flights of cadets. I want us to attain a balance of leadership, aerospace and emergency services activities.

QUESTION: What advice would you share with members new to CAP?

C/CMSgt Saenz: I recommend they make a point of getting to know everyone in their squadron - from fellow new cadets to senior members. You’ll be surprised how welcoming everyone is if you respectfully introduce yourself and ask them to tell you about their CAP experiences.

When building a wood fire, use the essential elements:
🔥 Tinder - The diameter of pencil lead
🔥 Small Kindling - The diameter of a pencil
🔥 Large kindling - The diameter of your thumb

Also, be sure to gather 3X the amount of fire starter needed. Having a fire extinguish for lack of fuel must be avoided.

Our squadron was honored to meet virtually with Colonel Terry Virts last evening. Col Virts is a former International Space Station Commander, Space Shuttle Pilot, and Test/Fighter Pilot.

We are inspired, to say the least, with his incredible stories and photographs which he shot from space.

Cadets and senior members lined up after the presentation for an amazing Q & A session.

Thank you Astronaut Terry Virts for sharing a very memorable evening with us.
