Pattern is excited to announce that the Pattern Fellows Class of 2024 graduated today. What a terrific group of people. These professionals from across the Hudson Valley spent the last six months of their time as Fellows learning about regional issues and the interconnectedness of them, including topics such as water supply, broadband connection, childcare, housing and more. Congratulations on your hard work!
Thanks to The Highlands Current for sharing information about our regional childcare study and the challenges it underscores for early education and workforce participation in the Hudson Valley.

Welcome Grace to Pattern for the summer! Grace Roebuck is a rising senior at Bryn Mawr College where she majors in Growth and Structure of Cities with a minor in Sociology. Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, she fell in love with urban planning and community research while at college. Most recently, Grace received the 2024 Westchester Municipal Planning Federation Scholarship Award, and last summer she successfully researched and wrote a $50k grant to design a new biking and pedestrian path through her hometown of Bedford. This summer, she will be working on researching adaptive reuse strategies for closed schools and malls throughout the Hudson Valley. Grace is so excited to be a part of the Pattern for Progress team and looks forward to contributing to their important and meaningful work throughout the region.
Pattern is excited to be working with the Town of Shandaken. It is home to Belleayre Mountain and some of the most popular hiking areas in the Catskill Park, which is now attracting more than 10 million visitors a year. It is the only town that is 100% inside the boundaries of the Catskill Park and the New York City watershed area that feeds the city's reservoirs.
Pattern was happy to play a role in reviewing, discussing, and ultimately celebrating these important investments in housing across the Hudson Valley. These will be new homes that are direly needed by our neighbors to support vibrant communities and an ample workforce for the region.

We were happy to join Congressman Pat Ryan, leaders from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, and Crown Castle in Newburgh yesterday to discuss the $664 million in federal money that will be used to expand access to broadband in New York. Earlier this year, Pattern led an effort in the Mid-Hudson Region to identify the final addresses and community facilities that are not yet connected.
Many thanks to the Hudson Gateway Association of REALTORS for asking us to moderate a panel on economic development this morning. It was a great discussion about industry sectors, adaptive re-use, housing and other factors that help our region to attract and retain jobs.
Have you read Pattern's research brief on wireless connectivity? The brief focuses on the deployment of infrastructure for next-generation wireless connectivity, with a special focus on the proactive steps that local governments must take to get their communities ready for 5G.
Find it on our website at www.pattern-for-progress.org.
Pattern CEO Adam Bosch will moderate a discussion about economic development on Thursday with our friends at Hudson Gateway Association of REALTORS. There is a lot happening in economic development, from investments in our downtowns and along our highways, to industry sectors such as biotech and tourism. We hope you'll join us to learn more. Details below.
New birth data suggest that people might have been doing a little more than working from home during the pandemic. Births throughout the Hudson Valley took a noteworthy jump in 2021, the year that followed the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic. This reversed a longstanding trend toward fewer births in the region. Data and new stories suggest that other parts of the country and the globe have seen a similar spike in post-pandemic births.
The Pattern Fellows Program was fortunate to learn all about artificial intelligence last week. We had amazing guest speakers, including Andrew Sica, a senior technical staff member working on AI at IBM; Brad Johnsmeyer from Ecohome; and Jason Scott, who was a founding member of the AI practice in the law firm of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani. We learned about the broad applicability of artificial intelligence, emerging uses across industry sectors, and some of the sticky legal and practical questions that are still to be answered.
New York has released a new year of school enrollment data, which show that most of our counties in the Hudson Valley continued to experience dropping enrollments. Only Rockland and Ulster counties saw year-over-year gains. The significant decline in students throughout the Hudson Valley stands as a gloomy harbinger for our regional workforce, which is already feeling the stress of a worker shortage across many industry sectors.
The Pattern team was fortunate to join childcare providers and youth advocates from across Dutchess County yesterday to share our interactive report on the state of childcare in the Hudson Valley. We were impressed by the energy and creative thinking in Dutchess County, where they are working on a 10-year plan to change the model of childcare to preserve and expand this critical service.
Pattern's interactive report on childcare in the Hudson Valley was featured on the cover of newspapers throughout the region this morning, underscoring that our childcare businesses are quickly disappearing because of demographic changes and economic stress. We were happy to join civic leaders in Orange County last night as they honored Derrik Wynkoop with the Ottaway Medal for his leadership and philanthropy, and for being one of the all-time nicest people you will meet. We know that Walden Savings Bank is fortunate to have Derrik as its CEO, and Pattern feels just as lucky to have him on our board of directors. Congratulations, Derrik!
