We had a blast today at Stew Leonard's Touch-a-Truck event! I think we found some future EMTs!

Two of our members, Silvana and Dan, were present at the Newington High School Career Fair this past week. They were able to share their knowledge about NEMS and being an EMT with Newington high schoolers!

NEMS is having our annual fund drive to raise the funds needed to keep our ambulances in service! Reminder postcards were sent to Newington residents and include a link to our donation page. Last week, NEMS held our annual award banquet! Our members were recognized for their involvement with NEMS and awards were given to members with high hours and patient contacts. Congratulations to EMT Kyle for receiving Propationary Member of the Year! We also wanted to congratulate Mitali for receiving NEMS Member of the Year!

February is Heart Health Month! Here are some tips from the American Heart Association to improve your heart health!

NEMS is hosting a class in February! This class includes training in 1-rescuer and 2-rescuer CPR/AED for adults, children, and infants. It also provides instruction about mild vs. severe airway blocks and gives a brief overview of opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies.

The intended audience is anyone who works outside the healthcare setting who is interested in obtaining CPR certification and/or needs CPR training as well as a course completion card for a job or regulatory requirement. Use this link to sign up: https://forms.gle/aT3LjqkWZmVxhrADA

EMT Jen talked to the 8th grade students at The Academy of Biomedical Sciences at Martin Kellogg Middle School a couple of weeks ago about being an EMT and gave a tour of one of our ambulances!

NEMS is hosting another class! This class provides an overview of common medical and trauma-related emergencies and includes training in how to apply personal protective equipment (PPE) and provide basic first aid as a bystander before first responders arrive. As part of this training, participants will learn how to recognize signs of a heart attack, stroke, allergic reaction, life-threatening bleeding, fractures, various environmental emergencies, and more. The class includes hands-on training in basic first aid skills and provides a certification card from the American Heart Association upon completion of the course. A new class of probationary members completed their new member orientation this past weekend. We’re excited to have more probies training with us!

Last Friday, local homeschooled children from Newington stopped by NEMS and learned about being an EMT and how we respond to 911 calls. The parents and children asked lots of good questions and EMT Abby did an excellent job giving everyone a tour of one of our new ambulances!
