Thankful Generosity 09/03/2024

Title: Thankful Generosity
Series: 1 Samuel 2023, 2nd Samuel 2024
Speaker: Cooper Starnes
Bible: 2 Samuel 9; Romans 8:15
Date: September 1, 2024

God is forever faithful to preserve, protect, and bless his covenant people. In recognition of God's rich blessings, David sought a way to bless others because of how he had been so richly blessed. That is the pattern which we must also follow. We have been redeemed and brought in the family of God through Christ. For we who have been so richly loved, we must be quick to seek to bless others with whatever gifts the Lord has given to us.

God's Will 09/03/2024

Title: God's Will
Speaker: Cooper Starnes
Date: August 25, 2024

How do we know what God's will is for our lives? This is a question which every believer must answer throughout their lives. But what is God's will? Scripture gives the answer clearly. And where Scripture doesn't speak directly to our decisions, it provides the principles that act as guardrails to keep us on the right path.

God made rich promises to David in the Davidic Covenant. David prayed for the Lord to bring about those promises. Chapter 8 shows how God began fulfilling his covenant promises in David's lifetime. The final fulfillment has come in Christ, the perfect warrior-judge king.

Bible: Romans 8:14
Date: August 18, 2024

This verse 14 starts a new subsection: verses 14-17.
This verse begins with For, meaning that it refers to the section prior. The message Paul is telling us is this: We have assurance of salvation, the absolute certainty of the final perseverance or preservation in Jesus Christ by faith. If we are led by the Spirit, we are sons of God.

Title: Instruction for Mankind
Series: 1 Samuel 2023, 2nd Samuel 2024
Speaker: Cooper Starnes
Bible: 2 Samuel 7:18-29
Date: August 11, 2024

In the second portion of 2 Samuel 7, David responded to the great covenant the Lord made with him in the first half of the chapter. David's response to the rich promises he received was to repeat and plead with God to bring those promises about. We also must know and repeat the promises of God in Scripture, and ask the Lord to bring his promises about. He is faithful, He will surely do it.

Bible: Ephesians 2:1-10
Date: August 18, 2024

Paul defines the church in Ephesians. Jesus promises unity instead of diversity.
We were once dead, but are brought back to life by Jesus. God is rich in mercy-He is loving. We are saved by grace through Jesus. He took our sin, undeservingly.
We are God's workmanship.
The church is not a option. We are called to be one body, to unity.
Christ is an anchor and represents freedom.

These verses (12-13) are Paul's application, exhortation, and appeal based on the previous verses 8:5-11.
Failure to follow Paul's teaching can or will lead to antinomianism. This is important in understanding the doctrine of sanctification.
Here is Paul's most important statement on this doctrine, likely in all of scripture. Here is this chapters first application.
We are told how a christian becomes sanctified.

Pauls objective in these 3 verses is to give the Romans (and us) a strong assurance of our final and complete salvation. He reminds us that we have been freed for the law of sin and death.
We that do this, walk according to the Spirit.

His application Paul repeats his thesis in verse 9, followed by a picture of the what is a Christion is in verses 10 and 11.

Speaker: Cooper Starnes
Bible: 2 Samuel 7:1-17
Date: August 4, 2024

2 Samuel 7 is the covenantal high water mark of the Old Testament. God entered into the Davidic Covenant with David, promising that the Messiah would come from his line. The revelation and promises in this covenant built on the larger Covenant of Grace, by which God was at work to redeem his people through Christ. The Lord was building his spiritual temple in Israel and David.

Bible: 2 Samuel 6

Worshipping our God is what we were created for. But how do we know how to worship God rightly? In this chapter, we see three crucial aspects to worship. Worship must be heartfelt, obedient to the Bible, and focused on the Lord. We must worship the way that the Lord has asked us to. Only then will we worship rightly.

We will cover this section over 3 weeks. Last week, Paul covered the negatives, that is for the non Christian. These week we will cover the positives of the Christian life. Paul tells us here that we are in the Spirit and have life and peace (vs 6). We did not have any of this before we became Christian.
Why peace? see verse 4: the non Christian cannot please God. The Christian has an answer--peace.

The remaining verses of chapter 8 proves Paul's contention that is found in verse 1.
That is the fundamental proposition which is to show us the absolute certainty of full and complete salvation of those in Christ Jesus. They are all in the Spirit.

And so today we are tasking ourselves with an attempt to decide whether this section of scripture is a reference to the unregenerate man, or to a regenerate man; regenerate to the extent that this is Paul referring to himself at the time of the writing of this letter which is as we have said the reformed majority exposition of this passage; or is it a reference to an immature Christian. And so on last week we made an effort to see if there were other passages in Scripture which would illuminate the matter. We looked at the passages that are the most often used by commentators as parallel statements to the one we are studying. But I think we can agree that the passages used while they on the surface appear to describe the same conflict and the same state of misery, they are not at all parallels to what we find in this section. What is our next step?

Far too often we believe we have the answers to everything. We think know better than one another, our bosses, and (while we may not admit it) the Lord. Only King Jesus knows all and rules over all. If we are to walk faithfully as believers, we must humble ourselves before Christ and seek to obey his commands.

Two views of this chapter:
1. a view as a picture of Sanctification of the man in Chapter 7.
2. a view of Justification continued from chapter 5.
The theme is found in verse 1, assurance of Salvation.
Verse 2 starts with For, or Because. This is the explanation of verse 1.
The phrase "has set you free" is aorist tense meaning we have been made free once and forever and refers to all Christians.
In other word. it is about Justification.
We are in Christ Jesus so this (Justification) has already happened to us.

David finally ascended the throne of Judah following the death of Saul. While his reign was established, God had promised he would rule over all of Israel, not just Judah. And yet, David remained patient and left his situation to the Lord. We, the church militant, are living in a similar situation. Christ has fully accomplished redemption and established his kingdom already. And yet, we are awaiting the full consumation of His kingdom. In this period of partial fulfillment and waiting, we must be patient and hopeful, as David was, trusting that our Jesus will bring about every promise soon.

Romans 8 is a continuation of Romans 5:12-21. It deals with the certainty of salvation. Chapters 5 and 8 deal with the same process.
Paul writes on the ultimate assurance of the perseveration of the saints. We are now in Christ Jesus, no longer under the law.
We will start with a review of Chapters 6 and 7, both dealing with issues Paul brought up in chapter 5
