What should you know about blood pressure? 🩺

Well, let's start with the numbers. Knowing your numbers can be the reason why you detect an abnormal blood pressure reading and end up saving your life. It's important to know about blood pressure since there is a high association between higher blood pressure and increased cardiovascular risk.

140/90: Stage 2 Hypertension. Systolic BP >140 OR a diastolic BP >90. Indicates Class 1 indication for both lifestyle modification and blood pressure lowering medication. We recommend reassessing BP in 1 month.

A message from Dr. McFadden, MD:
“I’ll be sharing what has helped me understand how the body, mind, and gut show anxiety and what parts are involved. Then we’ll dive into a somatic practice discovering where we hold anxiety and building trust with these sensations, processing them and moving through the physical and emotional parts to a place of integration. Come join and make sure you’re comfortable and near a place you can lay down if you want.”🌾

Transitioning to a plant based diet is easier when you set some steps for yourself. We each can decide what we will incorporate first, but these 4 steps are essential steps you can take to start.
🥦🍎🥭🍓🍊
1. Setting a goal and writing it down keeps you motivated and accountable. Having a motive can make this goal long term.
2. Starting with the most important meal of the day is important for any type of diet. Starting with a plant based breakfast will help you feel motivated for the rest of the day.
3.Do not stress about protein. A plant based diet has a lot of options that contain protein. The next slide also has some ideas!
4.Consulting an expert helps guide you in this transition. IOPBM's providers are a great source for some extra help!
🍈🍌🫒🥒🥑
Plant Based Essentials:
We all need a list that will help guide us while we grocery shop. Use this list as a guide and continue adding more plant based sources as you learn more.

IOPBM’s New Service🥦🍎
⤵️
Psychiatrist, Dr. McFadden will be starting a new practice on June 7th!
💌The womens health circle virtual sessions are aimed towards individuals who struggle with how their body feels. We sometimes don't even recognize the stress our body is in resulting in constipation or diarrhea and can be masked with layers of anxiety or depression. In these sessions Dr. McFadden uses her knowledge from her degree in neuroscience in order to incorporate somatic healing.
🪴Healing the physical sensation and healing the pain requires you to honor and understand the feeling then allow for the process of release.
Emotions affect how the body feels. When we focus on identifying and healing emotions we can work on healing our physical symptoms.
🌱In these groups we will help you identify the emotions that are tied to your anxiety, bloating, constipation, etc.
This group will allow you to learn from each other, share experiences , and develop relational intimacy, and let your bodies heal. Learn the healing power of community, the systems that guide women's health, and the power of being with other women to expand our own capacity to experience a life full of love.

🖥Virtual group sessions with IOPBM will begin June 7, 2022🌱

Introducing IOPBM’s psychiatrist 🌿
Dr. Whitney McFadden is a women's psychiatrist and neuroscientist dedicated to helping women develop a relationship with their body and intimacy with their physical and emotional connection. Often physical pain can put our body and mind in a place of activation and hypervigilance. She has learned from her own healing what it's like to feel discomfort and ignore the signals that something is wrong. She has opened up to become more attuned to her body and develop a deeper knowing in what her body needs to heal. She has witnessed the healing that comes from a deep practice of the body's capacity to hold sensation and develop safety in knowing that these sensations are important and essential to feel. In her journey, she has developed a life that is full of nurturing, deep connection with others, relationship with nature, and attunement to body rhythms that serve her health and wellbeing. We can't wait to share this level of living with you all.

Some IOPBM information for your Wednesday 🍓🍒
-
Fiber has been found to promote feelings of satiety. Meaning that it helps to prevent overeating and food cravings. Fiber also helps support weight loss and maintain normal blood sugar and insulin levels.
Which makes sense because it is hard to overeat whole- plant foods.
Foods that people tend to overeat have similar characteristics: they are processed, have low to no fiber, and are high in fat and sugar.
Highly processed and refined foods that are common in today's diets lack active enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and fiber to properly nourish and exercise the colon for good health. Healthful natural foods nourish the very cells of the colon.

At IOPBM our providers educate and guide patients to a healthy lifestyle. The first step is with education!

We use the term "plant based", and you might wonder if we mean "vegan". There are important distinctions between the two diets that most people aren't aware of. To fully understand the different health benefits each provides we must know the specific distinctions.

Veganism describes not only individuals who do not eat any animal products, but induvials who do not wear any animal products or believe in using animals in any way that inflicts harm. An important distinction is that a vegan diet is not by default a healthy.

Those who eat a plant- based diet do not necessarily avoid animal products in their clothing, hygiene, and overall products they use. They tend to opt for unrefined foods and avoid the processed foods that many vegans eat. Whole- plant foods are low in processed fat and is an ideal way to prevent disease, get more fiber, and ward off medical issues.

What causes high blood pressure?

When diagnosing high blood pressure, we want to figure out whether it's “primary” hypertension, or “secondary” hypertension. This is *just an overview from Dr. *

Intro to Primary vs Secondary Hypertension:

1️⃣The pathogenesis of primary hypertension poorly understood but is most likely the result of numerous genetic and environmental factors that have multiple compounding effects on cardiovascular and kidney structure and function.

Primary hypertension does not have a single known cause, but certain risk factors increase your chances of developing the condition, including:

- Genetic Predisposition & Family History
- Overweight and Obesity
- High Sodium Diet
- Potassium intake (low)
- Physical Inactivity
- High Alcohol Consumption

Vs:

2️⃣Secondary Hypertension:
A number of common and uncommon medical conditions may increase blood pressure and lead to secondary hypertension. In many cases, these causes may coexist with risk factors for primary hypertension and can be significant barriers to achieving adequate blood pressure control. A specific, remediable cause of hypertension can be identified in approximately 10% of adult patients with hypertension. If a cause can be correctly diagnosed and treated, patients with secondary hypertension can achieve a cure or experience a marked improvement in BP control, with a reduction in CVD risk.

Some common causes of secondary hypertension:
- Renal parenchymal disease
- Renovascular disease
- Primary aldosteronism
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Medications
- Alcohol Induced

Some uncommon causes of secondary hypertension:

other than primary aldosteronism

Have you ever wondered why doctors promote a high fiber diet?

A large body of scientific literature suggests that eating a variety of foods containing high fiber has a protective effect against colon polyps and colon cancer. A high fiber diet can also be protective against other cancers such as breast, o***y, and endometrial cancer. Fiber is found in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds.

To learn more about polyps and whether you need a screening test, please contact your physician or make an appointment with one of our expert gastroenterologists:
