“I think that art is the ability to textualize, visualize, or musicalize one’s experience of the world—not on a diaristic, literal level, but in a way that creates a commentary about what it feels like to live another day.” (Barbara Kruger)

2023 has been a devastating year for many around the world, and tragically, tomorrow will still be very difficult for many, especially in Gaza. We hope for peace born from people seeing each other beyond color, religion, identity, and nationality.
"There is no path to peace. Peace is the path." (Gandhi)

"There is a thing about beauty. Beauty is always associated with the male fantasy of what the female body is. I don’t think there is anything wrong with beauty. It’s just what women think is beautiful can be different. And there can be a beauty in individualism. If there is a wart or a scar, this can be beautiful, in a sense, when you paint it." (Jenny Saville)

“I work with my gut and what I really like when it comes to silhouettes. I don’t respond to anything that is on trend. I am decidedly anti-fashion in that sense. My know-how to construct a garment is traditional. My understanding is very local.” (Chinar Farouqi, Injiri founder)

“Brilliant Earth: The Ceramic Sculpture of Tony Marsh” and “Creature Comforts” by Brent Estabrook at Long Beach Museum of Art (), on view till March 19, 2023.
“I think arts job in part, is not to reassure, craft reassures – art is subversive and art is a critique, it’s a critique of something and art typically does not want to uphold the good standing of history and wants to destroy history and say look at me, don’t look at that, look at me, I’m what matters, I am of this moment, that’s irrelevant now, I’m what I just supplanted, what used to be important and now what I’m going to be is important, an artist is kind of that way and it’s very, it’s a very different mindset in craft and so true crafters versus true artists, so is there all kinds of flashover boundaries in between I mean, of course, are there territories in which one another engage? Yeah, of course. Is one important to the other? Yes, of course. Are they the same thing? Absolutely not.” (Tony Marsh)

Injiri’s founder, Chinar Farouqui, on her favorite Indian textile technique: “If I have to choose one, it would be block printing. I respect and value that slowness of the process – the time it takes to carve the blocks, the fact that each stamp in the pattern is marked by hand, and the tiny imperfections that arise because of it. You can see the emotion and the skill that has gone into creating the textile and that’s a quality I feel should be cherished.”
