Woops... we've been so busy roasting new coffees to put on the table we've forgotten to announce them in Facebook posts! Just added: a beautiful Mexico Gesha Don Rafa and and exceptional Honduras El Cedro. Grab a bag of each in our coffeehouses or order online while you can! As always, our coffees are seasonal and limited in supply.

Merry Christmas! Both coffeehouses will be open until 5 pm today for your last minute coffee or gifting needs, and closed tomorrow on Christmas Day. Back to our regular hours of 6 am to 8 pm on Monday!

Throwback to one of Rachel’s past pours ✨

Have you ever read the bottom of our beans? Our bags are now, and always have been biodegradable/compostable! Even the tin tie can be repurposed. Because we choose the eco-friendly route, we recommend that you invest in a reusable storage container such as an Airscape (available for purchase in our coffeehouse and online) to transfer your coffee into and keep it at its freshest if you don’t expect to use it up within a short time. You can absolutely store it in the original bag as well, but an airtight container will prolong the coffee’s flavor and you will be much happier, especially if you are a hardcore coffee connoisseur ☕️

Dear coffeehouse guests using our online or app ordering: in the interest of serving you better, we are phasing out our usage of the Joe Coffee app and moving to having all online orders through our new Clover POS system. You can find the link to our new online ordering at the top right of our website homepage, or search us in the Clover app. It has been great working with Joe Coffee, but streamlining our online ordering to one method will help us with speed and accuracy of service. During the transition, we will be limiting the availability of Joe Coffee to only our off-peak hours. If you have prepaid value in your Joe Coffee account, now is a good time to spend that down. Now roasting: the centerpiece of our rockstar trio of rare/limited holiday coffees, our Rainforest Alliance certified Guatemala Finca El Zapote Gesha! Original label artwork hand drawn by artist Co Garren, barista at Kean Coffee Newport.

Finca El Zapote has been in the Meléndez family for more than 100 years and four generations. Acatenango was officially designated a geographic micro-climate in 2006, after many years of recognition for distinguished coffees. The volcanic soil provides optimum development of the coffee trees, and cherries that are distinctly concentrated in sugars. Julio Meléndez finds the climate perfect for growing his family’s prized Gesha. The farm is focused on sustainability and is certified Rainforest Alliance, UTZ, and 4C.

We are proud to partner with Julio and his 150 acre pristine farm in Acatenango, a prime example of the potential of this special region.

Semi-sweet chocolate, peach, black tea, and dried cherry notes complement lush honeysuckle and jasmine aromas, with a syrupy body and bright orange and stone fruit acidity. This is a beautifully balanced and elegant coffee.

We are back with another Beyond the Beans interview, this time featuring Kean Tustin’s Jessica Hurtado! Here’s an excerpt:
“Coffee is in my blood. Where I come from, my Mexican heritage, it’s a thing that you offer guests coffee at night, any time of day! It can be 10 pm and we will offer you coffee. I remember drinking cafe con leche, “coffee with milk”, at 10 years old. I learned later it was just instant coffee with milk, but it was something I grew up with. Coffee evolved as I got older, for example, I came to Kéan Coffee and had to develop my palate big time. I got to learn about different origins and taste notes, which is important to explain to guests. I technically just grew up on instant coffee, but it was always a staple in my house and will continue to be forever.”

We are super excited about our new house made hibiscus fruit tea! After weeks spent crafting our recipe to get the perfect ratio of sweet and tart with a little citrus kick, our Hibiscus Citrus Punch has launched. The best part is that it's completely natural and healthy, with no added sugars! It’s still off menu so be specific when you order and refer to this post while the team is in the implementation phase 😉

Update: With heavy hearts we must share with you that Chanel has passed. She was, and is, so loved by so many, and many are grieving. Thank you for your continued thoughts and support.

On Memorial Day a beloved member of our local barista community, Chanel Garcia, was in a serious motorcycle accident. Many of our baristas are close with her and love her dearly, and are as devastated by what she is going through as her crew at Balboa Lily's where she is a barista - one of our lovely coffee accounts. Her injuries were severe, and she unfortunately does not currently have medical insurance. We want to help spread the word to the entire coffee community and community at large.
